Almost made it to the lake!

#1 Post by Liquid Asset » Sun Aug 25, 2019 7:08 pm

My son and I were heading to the lake and 2/3's of the way there it sounded like a bomb going off. Leaving a stop light I thought I lost a u joint.

Truck is a 2017 f350 gas, didn't think it was capable of doing it lol
After my wife's accident in June ( some might remember the totalled new explorer ) she got a f-150 with the 5.0 and ten speed trans. Needless to say it towed the boat for the first time today! Does awesome but doesn't stop quite as good.

Wow, I have not seen a sheared driveshaft since my younger days running Jeeps with big block motors and big tires. Looks like a bad design offhand.
Big and ugly but we love our 1999/2000 Crest II DL with a Yamaha F115

I did that on flat ground with a 6.2 Ford Gasser leaving the stop light! That shaft is at best.090 . My brother picked up the boat and the truck was towed to the dealership. Just rolled 50k but have plenty of warranty left. . I'm supposed to leave next Thursday for Indian River mi. About 500 miles round-trip.

My wife's new f150 tows the boat great, doesn't stop as well but tows great. If needed we can take that north for labor day weekend!!!

These days mfr’s are trying to get rid of weight and they are reducing excess strength/weight on drive trains, body parts, bumprs, etc etc. Things are lighter-weight and engineered to the minimums to save weight..... this makes for no reserves. Sad but true.

damn..never ever would have expected that to happen, especially on a heavy duty 350... glad you have warranty left, but sorry it messed up your lake plans. Oh well, you know, it could have been worse. Hope they get your repair done sooner than later.

Did the carrier bearing fail and seize? That shiny area is interesting. At least it didnt happen at speed, I've seen vehicles pitch pole when that happened, but I guess with aluminum shafts these days, it would just collapse..

The drive shaft is one piece. Dealership overnighted one so it should be fixed tomorrow at no cost to me. I asked if they have seen this before and they said a couple of times but not on a Gasser. My last truck 6.7 diesel f350 was way more impressive leaving a stop light so I was quite surprised to have this happen! I regularly tow 10k+lbs so the pontoon is an easy day for the truck. I leave Thursday for Indian River( inland waterway) in northern Michigan, that's a 500 mile round trip so glad it happened now! If something falls through getting my truck fixed I'll be putting the little f-150 through it's paces lol.
