New boater and REALLY old

#1 Post by Dennis J. Aitken » Wed Feb 26, 2020 6:32 pm

OK Before I get into the question I know some of you are already laughing and saying, "How old are you?"
Well, I'm so old the Dead Sea wasn't even sick when I was born!
OK being old I find there are days I can't remember where I put my keys, if I had breakfast or why the Hell I came into the room.
.
So... If you are out on a new lake how do you find your original starting spot at the end of the day with little structures for reference?
Is there an app I can use on my phone? Oh the phone might be another thing we can talk about some day but anyway I would hate to be out there and not be able to find my truck or trailer while the better half is ready to fall off the boat from laughing hysterically.

Use an app or GPS with breadcrumbs or trails

I use the GPS/Depthfinder and keep a Trail for it.

You can always backtrack the trail.

I also keep a map of the lake and a compass on the toon.

Batteries go dead, electronics quit. A map and compass is always an asset to have.

Just use whatever map app you already have on your phone. Google maps or whatever Apple uses.
In Google maps you can just hold down your finger on your current location and select save, name it something, and it'll put a pin on your map.
I did that for a while before getting a cheap nav unit which I mainly got for the depth finder. I actually kept using my phone that way because it at least showed the lake whereas the cheap nav unit was just a white screen although its compass worked well in conjunction with the phone map. New boat has a Simrad.
Also in Android, you can send your location via messenger to anyone including yourself and you'll get a link that when you click it will open maps with a pin in it.

Yeah, that's the same one I had. The Strikah Fo'!
Using the cell nav with the compass and saved spots on the strikah worked well.

What lake?how big?

Download free navionics, free us topo maps and windy is free and very helpful even at home, blowboaters use it all over the world a good radar map app for storms coupled with windy can help best storms

That should get you started on android.

Make sure to have a way to charge phone even if you have a full battery, my wife has same apps on her phome, just in case

That reminds me, another thing we keep on board is a little $35 lithium ion jump starter that also has a built in flash light and USB port for charging phones in an emergency. Just can't forget to charge IT once in a while!

Wow! I can't thank you guys enough for all the help!
What I will do is practice with the Google maps at places like parking lots while the better half is shopping.
I can't wait for Spring! This should be a LOT of fun!
I'll keep everyone updated or at worst be posting for help while lost on a lake! Only kidding! LOL

So you are saying "I am sitting at the helm of my pontoon, while my neighbor pulls the pontoon and trailer around shopping center while mama shops"

Now THAT's funny!
I'll set a point in the parking lot and then go a few miles away (in my truck) while she is in the store shopping and see if it will bring me back.
I think I might be able to do it with coordinators. Example: This would be in the middle of Lake Koshkonong - 42°53'25.7"N 88°56'13.4"W
