A guard or plow between the pontoons?

#1 Post by onlybillhere » Mon Apr 27, 2020 1:52 pm

So I was out on the river yesterday and there are always clusters of water Hyacinths and for some reason it was really bad and they would extend from one side of the river bank to the other blocking you from going through. well we went through a couple and had to turn the engine off to cut them free from the motor. This was happening a good amount of times too. so i was wondering....have you ever seen anyone with a guard or some kind of plow (not sure how to describe it) that goes between the pontoons that still allow water to go through but keep surface plants and possible debris from getting to the motor?
I am thinking it would be just at the water line or a tad below it.
even something that could be flipped up to be out of the way in normal operation.

maybe this is where i go on to Shark Tank with my million dollar idea ;)

Oh yea, I seen something like that. I think they call it a tritoon, only run you about $50k. :leghump

Could you put a carabiner on each end of a piece of vinyl coated chain and just clip it to the eyelet on the front of each tube so it would act like a skimmer? You'd have to detach one end to swing it around and drag everything off to one side I guess. I'm guessing you have your fuel tank on the back....the newer boats with the tank underneath have them in a triangular pod that would probably do some of the cowcatcher duties.

Maybe one day the tritoon will be a reality for me but not today...until then I have have to come up with some crazy things to make my boating activities more fun. I wonder how hard it would be to mount a snow blower to the front?? :lol3

There are guards that go around the prop and there are also blades that go in front of the prop. The blades may only be for larger vessels, but I’m sure someone has adapted it by now.

I actually think it is a good idea, in a slow way...kind of like thinking a shit brown metallic gremlin will get ---------

Try it! Are the plant totally floating or do they have roots to ground?

Worst case I see is a $30,000 blender for back of boat

they just float and that's the issue with them, they go with the flow and when they get caught up on something the other groups of Hyacinths get stuck too creating a huge floating barrier for us pontooners. I have a couple ideas in my head that I might try just to see.
