Fender Adjusters

#1 Post by DocPit » Sat May 23, 2020 7:13 pm

I just got my first boat, a Bennington 20 SLL. I’m told it’s considered bad form to keep fenders trailing in the water when underway. For me, the boat is a way to get out of my office for an hour or two. I don’t see myself untying six fenders, stowing them, then retying every time I go out for an hour or so. For several reasons, I don’t see just flipping them over the rails to the interior of the boat. Primarily, they’re in the way.
Possible solution: I found these Taylor Made Tidy-Ups adjusters
(https://www.amazon.com/Products-1016-Ti ... r=8-6&th=1) which seem like they would allow the fender to be raised and lowered easily, without having to untie/retie them. That might work. But some say the strap is too small for a square rail. Others say it’s fine. Any advice?

Check out EZfenders.com He's active on this forum and his product is well built. You'll find that you really won't need to adjust the height very often. If you're tying them to the rails or using a product like EZ fender, you'll find that you the fenders typically always hand down to the same place regardless of the dock you're tying up to.

By the way, DON'T buy these. I bought four of them and have used them a total of 6 times. 3 of the four snapped when I tried to push them onto the rail. They say they're for 1 1/4" rails, which is what I have, but when I've tried to push them over the top of the rail they break.

If you pretty much put your fenders in the same place every time, I highly recommend just installing these. Dealer put two on the top of the rails each side of my previous toon. Spare buttons are part 1009.

I think I was unclear regarding my intention. i want to be able to quickly elevate the fender and secure it to the top of the rail so that it is out of the water when I get underway. When I come back in to the dock, I want to be able to quickly lower the fender to the waterline. The Tidy-Up adjuster would allow me to do that without having to tie/untie the fender lines. But, there's that problem with the adjuster fitting a square rail.

I have some clips like the ones Steve showed that have a grab channel on the top so you can pull the rope up and cinch it back. I don't utilize it though, I take my fenders off once away from the dock. Takes the same amount of time to pop them off and stow them as reposition them, and no chance of a free swinging one scratching or denting the fencing.

The EZ Fenders will do exactly that with the a few twists of the set screw.

I tied a loop in the line so that my fender hangs from the easy fender by simply hooking the loop over the black thumb screw.

This allows me to easily adjust the line length if needed for various docking applications, but also keeps the fenders snugged up against the inside of the pen while under way.

I LOVE my easy fenders.

I have had the EZ fenders on my boat for several years now... They are great. so convenient when you pull up to a dock that's a different level then your own dock.. just loosen the thumb screw, slide your rope to where you want your fender and then just tighten the thumb screw back down. easy peasy.

For years, I have used the pricey, plastic Taylor Fender rope holders like the 4 shown in the photo above. I lost a fender last weekend and then lost the brand new replacement today. My first-mate has gotten out of practice pulling the fenders inside as soon as we leave the dock. By the time we realized it on both outings, it was too late.

So this evening, before I saw the above posts, I ordered 4 EZ Fenders from Bryan. He made some custom ones for me before for a different use on my boat. The EZ Fenders are very high quality and will definitely keep us from losing another fender.

Have you considered putting dock bumpers and fat fenders in your slip, instead of hanging on the railing of your boat.

That's what I do. No need to pull them up and put them back out since 95% of my boating does not involve docking somewhere else. I pull into my slip myself and raise the boat on the lift. I do keep a set of fenders stowed onboard for runs to the bars/restaurants, but that is not a daily thing.

I don’t have a dock. Like many others, my boat Is kept inside a dry-dock marina. The fenders protect the boat from dock rash after it is placed in the lake by the big fork lifts and when we return it to the dock after our day on the water.
