Dpdt switch for trim motor, can it be used as a spdt?

#1 Post by Joseph Elliott » Fri May 29, 2020 9:09 pm

I purchased a switch for my trim motor not understanding the difference in switches. Looks like it came as a dpdt. Can I simply attach my wires to a single side similar to this image I found in a different thread? http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh3 ... ring-1.jpg

There are 3 wires coming from my old Johnson trim motor and I haven’t played around to see which is which for fear of burning something out. Can a dpdt work or do I need a spdt?

Yes, as long as the current rating on each pole is sufficient for the trim motor demand. A DPDT is basically two SPST switches mechanically linked. You would just use one pole and its two outputs.....That is as long as it has a middle position where the input is disconnected, i.e. off position which it should be.

Thank you. My switch only has 6 poles but most of the wiring diagram indicate a seventh pole for a ground. Do I just ignore the ground?

The ground is for an indicator light inside the switch.

Are you trying to replace the no-longer-available rocker trim switch in the OMC remote throttle handle?

No, my controls don’t have that option. Just installing a rocker on the dash.
