60HP Yamaha lower end shattered!

#1 Post by Aluminum Maiden » Thu Jul 16, 2020 7:22 am

So it's true, the lower end on my motor hit a rock in our shallow river after 8 years and completely shattered it. It was a "High Thrust" lower end allowing the use of a 14" prop. I've had a real hard time finding one of these used in good shape or new and honestly available to ship. This leads me to a question of what else can I use as a lower end? Does it have to be a high thrust? Seems kind of counter productive to have a large prop on a shallow river. Can I use a normal lower on a 2006 T60? I think what makes it a "T60" is the lower end and it really is an F60. Summer is slipping by and anyone with a buck to make wants me to buy big and wait til summer is over to take delivery!

According to Crowly Marine, this is the most up to date model number for the full unit for a broad range of T60's and runs about $1550:

Related parts:

You can also type your engine model number in the search bar and it'll populate so you can pick your engine....make sure that's right as that part number says it's a 20.7" length so please don't go off what I'm listing....make sure for yourself.

Also available from PartsVu and other retailers. You may be running an old part number that has been superseded maybe several times which is why it may be showing low availability.

As far as running the bigger prop....if you think about it, what's it really cost you.....an inch of depth maybe? They offer the higher gear ratio in the smaller outboards or even larger outboards (like Mercury's Command Thrust) to give you more torque multiplication for the bigger prop to give you more authority to move out a brick like a pontoon better. Kinda like if you ever check the differential ratios between something like a four cylinder equipped vehicle vs the six or eight or turbo engines with more available torque in the same vehicle.

Hey Steiner, thanks for the reply and advice. Your point of an inch makes sense - especially if that's all it is. Unfortunately I had ordered the same unit from Crowley on Monday for about for over 200$ more than what it was in your link. (Social Credit Score?) At any rate, I was first told that there would be a delay of 3-5 days in shipping the order when I placed it. Within hours I got an email saying it was greater than 6 days with a chart of how long it would take and it did not match up with what they had said. So I called them and asked about and if the item was in stock and they immediately moved towards cancellation after I was not satisfied with a time estimate of 3-5 weeks. This sucks

Maybe try partsvu? They show two of the preceding models but not the latest.....maybe they've got a couple sitting around? I get my service kits from there.

Sorry to hear about your issue. The worst part is your off the water during prime boating season.

I hope you can find a replacement ASAP, but as for as the money goes, shouldn't you be making an insurance claim?

Hey, I just bought the same truck a month ago. I'm so happy with it towing along the Cherokee Foothills Parkway. My 2005 Hemi Durango with tow pack only has 90k on it and tows great but only has a five speed without the ability to manually select gears, and the torque peak is up around 5000 RPM. Maintaining 65 going up some of the grades it wants to jump down to 2nd and turn 4500 RPM....it'll run all day at that and accelerate uphill but you feel like you're killing it. The F-150 does it in 6th and 7th.

I hope you're at least carrying some sort of liability and environmental protection coverage!
