Some days i just hate having a boat....

#1 Post by onlybillhere » Thu Jul 16, 2020 9:18 am

So this morning, get up early before having to go into work, take the boat out to the river to test it out. I raised the motor and I wanted to see how it performs and if I need to make any changes. get the boat off the trailer into the water, go back and squeeze the priming bulb a couple times and start her up. she runs for a couple seconds then die. ok, no biggie, it's an older 2 stroke and does this all the time. squeeze the primer bulb a couple more time and start smelling gas. oh boy...take the cowl off the engine and there is gas at the bottom. I check the hoses because I had one slip off somehow before, they are good. squeeze the primer bulb and gas is squirting out the carb vent hole.
put boat back on trailer and take it home to tear down the carb to see what's up.

Sometimes you just can't win...

Your post title should say some days you hate having an OLDER boat.

Simply solution............. buy a new boat! Ya know ya want one! :)

there is a difference between wanting and affording a new boat. plus I see a decent amount of people with new(er) boats that have issues too. it's just frustrating sometimes...

With that pesky gas leak, now would be a good time to put some good insurance on it and maybe get you a down payment on that new boat......

we had insurance on the boat before we had the boat in our hands :) the guy we bought it from was redoing the seats so we didn't have the boat right off the bat...but had it insured ;)

If it flys, floats, or _ _ _ _s, you’re gonna have trouble with it.

I agree, its always something... Last year when I repowered with a brand new Mercury the first day out I got a water in fuel alarm. Sure enough fuel was in the engine fuel/water seperator. I ended up draining my tank and found pretty much no water. I think the installing dealer had water in there portable 5 gallon tank (they ran it on a portable tank for awhile, but that another story). But I cant prove it since its a repower. So yes, its always something with boats.... :scared

My old Merc years ago had the same problem. The float was sticking open, I removed bottom plus and used some air to blow it out. never had a problem after.
