It sucks when you have to deal with assholes, especially when they are in your family.

Let the bum have it.
Unless mom gives him money, he will go broke living there very fast.
Desperate addicts will sell/sign anything for cash.
Then just buy him out. Might be the deal of your lifetime.

But a boating accident sounds cheaper.
I am the guy at the boat ramp that gives you dirty looks when you are a complete idiot and too stupid to know it.

Should I bother with a more detailed story on this in the off topic? It goes beyond lazy entitled prick

Just gotta convince my wife. She’s said she’s not interested in any other cabin.
I hear that. I, also, have a strong-willed wife (see how politely I said that?). Sometimes I have to say, "Yes, dear" and wait for her to make the decision. Often that comes when she is the one to have to handle the mess - whatever that mess is. It's aggravating as hell sometimes, but in that case, once she says "Go", I go as fast as I can!

Maybe she will agree to try the rental course once and see just how wonderfully convenient and hassle-free it can be. "Well, honey, a friend of mine recommended this place and I thought maybe we'd see how much we like it. It's just a weekend."
Drive up, unload your bags, enjoy, walk away. That comfort just might be enough to start her wheels turning.

Again --- :2cents

She’s not going to sell. I believe it was a threat to sell to an outsider. MIL was banking on the huge emotional attachment and that we would cave in.

She is getting older, and would like to retire but she wants baby Jeff to have a guaranteed cabin to attend for the rest of his life. And she wants us to pay for it.

Originally she wanted to sell “half a cabin” to us. She’d keep the other half and baby Jeff would inherit. And until she dies baby Jeff would continue to come out to the cabin to drink beer, smoke pot, snort cocaine, eat, shit, piss, and sleep 17 hours a day.

Even if baby Jeff wasn’t a complete loser why would we want to own a huge asset with someone who didn’t earn or pay for their share? Right?

Regardless of baby Jeff’s % ownership we would be obligated to cover any and all expenses of the cabin if he can’t pay.

Let’s say we’re into the cabin for 150k and baby Jeff got his share for free….. if we need a new roof and baby Jeff can’t afford to pay for half we have to pay for him.

If we let the roof leak, the cabin eventually rots and falls apart. We’re out 150k. Baby Jeff doesn’t care what happens to the cabin because he literally has nothing to lose. He didn’t pay for anything.

And I’m the bad guy for not wanting to own a cabin with baby Jeff??

The fact MIL approached us initially and NOT baby Jeff is basically MIL not wanting to own a cabin with baby Jeff either.

I sometimes think I’m,going nuts, or,someone is slipping crazy pills in my water.

Life is too short to be involved with him. You are smart to stand your ground and not be used.
