Re-deck

Hey there everyone.

I am likely going to do a new deck within the year on my 2008 Tahoe.

Was thinking about material. Wood is the go to in general, but any comments from anyone on using composite/plastic etc?

It looks like it could a do it yourself project. Any thing to know in advance-even maybe don't do it?

Thanks.

I just did mine last fall. Marine grade plywood worked well for me. Mine is 8.5 feet wide. I used decking screws instead of bolt since mine is an underskinned tritoon with no access from below. Pics are in the pontoon restoration section.

The only thing that comes to my mind is the thickness. For example, on mine, the rub rail fits right on to the frame with 3/4" plywood. It slides right on the top and bottom for the screws to attach. I wonder if the rub rail would fit as securely if the deck material was less than the original thickness? I don't know... I just wonder.

Also, mine originally used screws throughout the middle of the sheets with bolts on the sides at the rail. I just re-did it the same way (no underskinning - 2 toons).

I reskinned mine late last summer.. pretty straightforward. The only thing I did wrong was got the wrong thickness. I hastily measured the old which was 5/8 and mistook it for 3/4..the only problem it created was with the rubrails. It was also a good opportunity to update the wiring and lighting very easily. However, my boat is 10 years older than yours.

Meant to address this also -- It is not hard to do yourself, and will save you a lot of $$ and time (waiting to be scheduled for someone else to do it). You'll find a number of folks here have done it and provide tips. There is also a large satisfaction level when you look at it finished and can say "I did that!"

I'm in the process of re-decking my toon. Going with marine grade plywood but I did take a good long look at Coosa board. about 3x the price of marine grade plywood but it won't need to be replaced again unless you take some serious damage to the deck.

YO, Bill -
Coosa Board seems like it would be great, but they are dang sure proud of it. Maybe start a new thread in Rebuilds so we can follow along? Of course, post lots of pics.

Good luck!

with this "lumber shortage" I'm worried that Marine grade plywood is going to jump in price. Pontoonstuff still has the price at $105 a sheet but they are out of stock. I'm going to order some just so I can keep the price....
speaking of "lumber shortage", my neighbor is having a new fence put up at his house, board on board, 476 feet of it....he waited 2 weeks longer and the cost of wood went up by $2000...........

I noticed on Lowe's website they show 3/4" Marine grade plywood for $80 and less. The thing to find out would be if it is in stock or not. My local Lowe's shows 2 of the 3 listed as out of stock, but one in. Home Depot, for example, shows out of stock.

Want me to mail you some?

Good luck!

so I went down to my local 84 Lumbar store and they had 3/4" marine grade in stock...$99 a sheet but i now have it. The guy helping me load the wood was commenting on how nice the wood looks and I agreed with him saying that i's almost a shame that we cover this up with carpet/vinyl/whatever else.

Glad you found some at less than $200 a sheet! It seems like when I bought it a year ago it was only a dollar or so less. I agree - it seems a bit of a shame to cover a good looking deck. When I re-floored mine I thought the same thing!

Good luck with it. Start a restoration thread and post some pics with your progress.
