I need help removing tilt/trim unit

#1 Post by guy48065 » Mon Mar 28, 2022 4:14 am

I can't seem to find guidance on how to remove the tilt & trim unit from my 'toon.
It's on a 2000 Johnson 40hp and it's a single-actuator type.
I need to rebuild it as I believe it's leaking internally. It just doesn't lift the outboard like it should. Oil level is good.

I've got it to the point where I think I can get the shaft the unit mounts to off if I remove the bracket bolts that are in the way, and drive the shaft out with a drift or a long bolt. It's pretty stuck from age.

Then what? I don't see where the wires disconnect?
I first thought the wires came off at the screws on the unit but that doesn't look to be the case.

The wires should terminate under the cowl somewhere. You should be able to find them by following the wires on the back of the trim button on your outboard. Personally since it's kinda old anyway I'd just mark them, cut them, and splice them back with some waterproof crimp connectors and a heat gun.

Don't use a bolt on the shaft if it's stuck. Get a brass drift or else you might put yourself in a tight spot.

I finally got up to my cottage last weekend and removed the unit. I'm kind of pissed that I ended up having to cut wires to do it because the connector inside the cowling is too big to fit through the hole in the outboard mounting bracket that the harness runs through. Totally stupid and unnecessary.

Has anyone here rebuilt one of these?

There's a lot of rebuild kits online and if you look closely at the reviews there's quite a few complaints that some of the o-rings are not the right size.

Nah I think there's only two other pontoon forums and they all have maybe five members that are semi-active like this one. When there's less than ten people looking at a nonspecific or non-specialized forum and you're the only one with what you've got, there's just going to be very little help available. I think we're all in the same boat when it comes down to it haha.
