Motor Pudding - Help!

#1 Post by TWB » Tue Jun 14, 2022 7:27 am

Hey Guys.
It's been a little while. Been watching, just quiet.
So... we're finally rebuilding our dock after its destruction during Hurricane Sally. Boat's been next to the house for almost 2 years. I have started it a couple of times during this wait time. Started up pretty easily. Started it over the weekend and it seemed to run fine. Even dropped it into gear to turn the prop slowly for a moment. No issues that I could tell.
After I turned it off, I noticed a small pile of what I can best describe as a small bowl of black pudding under the fin/ prop. Someone PLEASE tell me what it is and what the heck to do. I will be sad sad if it's a massive No-Go. Sorry no pics, because, you know, "Dammit!"

Any advice always welcome.

My first reaction is to check your prop seal. Lower unit gear oil is 90 weight so it is much thinner than pudding but it is a very, very thick/heavy oil. The thing about 90 weight is the smell. Once you know it, you know it - it stinks!

Did you get a solid "pee" stream while you were running it? A disintegrating water pump impeller/housing produces black.

Hey, Marc!
I did get a good pee stream, but I'm inclined to suspect the impeller. It has not been replaced in......... a long time. Gonna start with that and see what happens.

Thanks for the insight, buddy!
