Oil leak, what's your take?

#1 Post by billyman » Sun Aug 23, 2009 9:24 pm

Hi, I'm new here & have spent most of the evening reading all the posts, but it's getting late & I better be getting to bed. However, I'm hoping someone can help me w/ this. Lately I have been noticing a pretty bad oil leak around the top of my motor (1995 70hp Force)

I have ZERO experience working on boat motors. I bought this boat last OCT & this is the first problem I have had w/ it. I do the usual maint, but don't have a clue where to begin here. I'm hoping it's just a matter of tightening down some bolts.

Your thoughts??

I would suggest you pull engine cover and clean the engine and lower unit. Then run it a little while and pull the cover to see where it's coming from. Right now you don't have a clue as it's a messy situation. :2cents

Being a 2 stroke I think what you have is a fuel leak and thats what is left after gas evaporates.
Pull cowel and replace all fuel lines and check for a stuck float on carbs

Thank you all for your suggestions. I cleaned the engine & surrounding area last night, hooked up the ear muffs & ran the engine at idle for about 10-15 mins. I didn't see any obvious leaks, but did find one spot where it's possible, but it could have been the degreaser. I couldn't work on it any longer as it got dark. I'll be back at it this evening & keep you posted.

Thanks again.
