square tube bending
Any suggestions for bending your own 1" square tube bows?
I have done lots of round tube bows. I tried filling my square tubes with sand and they have crinkles on them.
Any suggestions? I called a local place and they want $800 to do it with my tube.
Thanks in advance.

Re: square tube bending
Square Tube is difficult (at best) to bend without crimping it.The only way we've been able to bend it is by making "precisely placed" cuts throughout the radius of the bend.. The problem with square tube is that the material truly has no where to go as it's displaced.. We would take a bandsaw (1/16" blade thickness) and cut slits about 20% of the diameter (about 3/8" on 2" tube) every 1" along the tube where the bend will be..
If you're trying to bend tubing, then I asume that welding up the slits post fab, won't be an issue for you..
If you need any more detailed info or perhaps a drawing, just let me know.

Not sure if it would work on square tubing, but have seen it work on three quarter copper tubing. Just fill with sand and tape the ends. The sand will prevent it from crimping. If it doesn't work you are out the cost of a few pounds of sand, and maybe a little tubing.

Try this setup, a buddy of mine with a Fab shop has a similar one and it works great on square steel. I don't know if it works well on Alum.

Philly is a bit far away....I was going to buy a square die for my bender in the near future because I need to make some custom rails for my Toon when I remodel it.leon phelps wrote:Philly.
