Oil leaking on lower unit

#1 Post by mikeherb » Mon Oct 26, 2009 4:37 pm

Edited Note - I attached a resized pic of the opening this oil is coming from.

Check out these pics. I have oil on the outside of my lower unit that is coming from a hole in the outboard. I pulled the boat out in mid-September and but I just drained and replaced the gear oil today for the winter. That's when I noticed the oil.

From the angle of the spill it looks like the outboard was tilted when it leaked. I think it must have happened when I brought it home while it was on the transom saver. The oil was tacky to the touch as well so it had been on there for a while.

Anyone know what that hole is and if I have something to worry about? I can't find any reference to the issue in my manual.

Thanks for your help.

What is the oil coming out of? Is there a hole? Is it a 2 or 4 stk?

It is a hole in the outboard. The hole is on the right side of the motor. I tried to show it in detail in the enlarged picture. You can also see it in the second pic I posted.

It is a 2003 90 HP Merc 2-stroke.

The only thing I can think of is a top seal. Drop the lower unit and check under the water pump housing. Might as well change it while there
