Winterization - Moth Balls?

#1 Post by kaptap » Thu Nov 12, 2009 5:47 pm

I'm preparing to store our toon for the winter up on land and remember earlier this summer someone posting pictures of what a racoon did to their toon furniture. Should I put moth balls or something else inside the cover for the winter to keep animals out?

we put about 4 or 5 boxes worth of mothballs on the boat. the kind with each mothball wrapped in a little net. we drop them in the seats, storage compartments, everywhere. we throw lots on them around on the floor. any time you lift a corner of the cover a bit it reeks of mothballs. the first drive to the lake in spring and a few hours on the lake and the smell is gone. some people use bounce fabric softener sheets, some use both.

I think the fabric sheets would be fine on a week by week but over a long winter mothballs are the way to go

During the summer I took some bounce sheets and attached them to the gazebo at the lake, mainly trying it on repelling mosquitoes. Normally the spiders come out about an hour or so before dark, spinning their webs. This was the only time since I have had the gazebo up, I didn't see any spiders. In the boat I use bounce, moth balls and damprid.

Our toon is stored at the lake in wooded area. Last year we used dryer sheets and no coons or spiders.

The guy we bought the "Floater" from suggested bucket of charcoal for moisture mildew over the winter.
It seemed to work good as the seats just took a little wiping come spring time.

Just Charcoal briquettes? That sounds like a good idea.
Might give that a try. :nana

Yep dumped a 10 pound bag in and set it right in the middle. If I know I'm gonna be away for more than a month I did it through summer too. Don't know if it really works but seemed too. :nana
