Some more interesting reading I ran into - http://www.americanfuels.info/2009/01/e ... ation.html - apparently many factor can conspire to change the speed at which the fuel in you boat can go bad.

Another old paper on this issue which really makes me believe it's not such a big issue was found at http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/fuels/rfg/waterphs.pdf

Another thing is my old '94 ford P/U sits for months on end with really old fuel (since just after hurricane Ike) and seems to run fairly well given its age and mileage.

The phase separation is not as big a concern as the effect it has on older fuel system components. It will eat the older fiberglass fuel tanks, and rubber hoses. It also will cause carb rubber parts to swell and soften. It's raising hell with larger boats with below deck built in fiberglass tanks. They have to be replaced by metal tanks, in most cases, and it costs a bundle. I still feel it's a scam at present technology, as it takes more energy to produce than you get out of it. Also using a food product as a fuel source, is driving up food prices for corn and other grains, which effects meat prices.
