bennington 2275 rl. Honda 150 OB Newbie question

#1 Post by _AJ_ » Wed Feb 17, 2010 11:36 am

Hello-

I'm new to pontoons and we will be buying our first this year. We are currently looking at a bennington 22 with a Honda 150. This one is like new and only has 200 hours on the motor. It has two pontoons.
I'm thinking this would be a good fit for me, but after reading up, everything points to triple logs. We would like a safe platform that performs decent an is reliable. We wanna pull an ocassional wakeboarder but mainly kids on tubes.

Would I be happy with this boat for 24k or do I need to save for awhile longer? Seems like the sky is the limit on price.
The owner says he's seen speeds in the high 30's. Is this realistic?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome

High 30 might be possible, but the only 2 log I have seen run in the high 30's is the Suntracker with nuvi log. Think they have been discontinued for this year. Ask if that speed is reading the speedo or gps speed. The three logs typically sit a little higher in the water with less drag. Still it is probably a good boat

I think I agree as much as I wanna bring o e home today, I'd be happier in the long run with a triple.
What are your guys thoughts on Honda Outboards? Is a 150 enough to move 22' boat well?
I've always had inboards and would like another. The water is pretty cold up here in NW Washington and the hot water shower plumbed off the engine is really nice. Very rarely do I see an I/ O for sale around here.
Unfortunately, price is a factor for me..lol

The 150 is plenty of motor (weight to hp) for a 22'. I have not heard anything bad about the Hondas. Check the max rated hp on the sticker on the boat, that will generally give you an idea of where you are there. Hmm just checked the bennington site an looks like max hp is 150 on the 2 log and 250 on the 3 logs, in the 22 ft range. Take it for a spin and if it does everything you want, go for it.

I have two boats. One is a V-Bottom Fiberglass boat with an I/O. One of the reasons that I bought my pontoon was because I wanted the Outboard. The Outboard is great. I put my I/O to sleep every year at the end of October, and don't get it out again until May. With the Outboard, I can take it out whenever I want, so if there is a warm day, I just get in and drive away. With the I/O, I would have to rewinterize it. I don't know your weather specifically, but I would imagine you need to winterize I/Os up there too.

Regarding the Honda, I have seen a lot of comments, and rarely do I see any negatives. I think the 150 is a decent size for a 22' or even 25' boat. With this said, everyone has their own idea of what enough power is, and I have never read anyone saying that they wish they would have gone for less. You should be able to easily pull tubers and skiers and have a decent speed.

I have a 115 on a 21' triple and it goes really well... Plenty of speed for tubing, skiing (barely), wakeboarding and kneeboarding...

I have a 2250 with a 115. Upper 30s would be a reach with the 150 with any weight on board at all. All I can say relative to tubing and skiing is...be ready to fill the tank! :lol3

That actually seams like a very good price to me though.

My 22' Fiesta twin pontoons has an older Yamaha 115. Max RPM rating for this motor is 5500 RPM and with a 15 pitch aluminum prop I am getting 5000 RPM. I am running 26 MPH at 5000 and I am wodering what you guys are running with your 22 footers with 115HP.

I love my Honda and it moves my 25 footer at a decent rate. I went from an old 2-stroke Yamaha 225 to the Honda, and I have to look at the tach just to see if the Honda is still running. And yes, at idle you really can't hear it. And at WOT, I get more wind noise than engine noise.

My only regret was not getting a 225. But hey, I got an extremely good deal so I really can't complain.

I'm right about that as well with a decent prop.
