Tunes!

#1 Post by WaltF » Mon Mar 08, 2010 10:48 am

Ok....
Some scumbag kid ripped off my 2 dollar cheapo cheezy stock stereo on my toon at the end of last season.
I'll kill that kid later.

Meanwhile, the Awesome wife bought me a replacement one for xmas!! :nana :nana

The stock stereo was a 40 watt x 4 Jenson with Aquatonic 6.5 2 ways that say 60 watts max on the back.

No idea if thats peak or RMS. Why isnt everything in RMS? Every thing should just be measured in RMS, dang it!

Ok... Installed the new stereo this last weekend, and we have tunes again! :alright :nana :nana

The new stereo, has a USB port right on the face! Sweet!

Ok... the question.
The new radio is 18 watts RMS x 4.
Kinda weak....
While ive had bitchN car stereo's over the years, i dont need a Bass Frequency bleeding ear stereo. :eviltaunt :nana :nana :rofl

I But i do want to hear it.

Thinking i need an amp...
Maybe a 50 RMS x 4?
Since the speakers say 60 watts max, im thinking i should be 'ok'?

Thoughts?

I would agree. 50x4 would be great. Should be fairly easy to install as well, and won't kill your batter too fast.

watt ratings are all over the place both on speakers and stereo's. I have found that speakers are typically either cheap, and built for efficiency (loose and loud with little power but sound like shit), or expensive and built to handle some power (firm and can be loud and sweet if powered right). I would imagine, your marine speakers are in the first category and will be just fine running on the new stereo. They will be much louder with a true 50 watt rms output amp but they will probably sound like shit and blow quickly... Just my 2 cents... Why not wire it up to the new stereo and see how it sounds first?

Ya i did wire it up already and its pretty weak with only 18 watts pushing speakers rated for 60.
Not that the stock speakers are all that great either. :rofl

The easiest and probably cheaper thing to do is go down to wal mart and buy a Sony or pioneer with 50wx4. Maybe some thing costing around $120. Seeing as it was a gift from your wife you might as well go the amp route. Does it have RCA connections?

Ya, its an Alpine and yup, it has the RCA connections, plus coming out of the harness, an amp power wire.
Since ive already installed the thing, im not going to uninstall it... im lazy... Hahaha! :rofl
Also, she got it for a steal.... something like 80 bucks on some killer sale..
And i haven't found any that cheap with the USB connection on the front, which i really want as i think im gonna toss the XM radio ability and replace that with quazillion hours worth of memory stick tunes. :nana

Now to find an el cheapo 50x4 amp! :nana
Anyone know of a cheap one? :alright

Walt,
I've also have a Alpine with USB capability on our boat, you'll love the extended radio run time compared to CD players which eat the batteries pretty quick. But I have one issue with the memory sticks and it's the ability to make a good random play-list. I've played around to the point of frustration with this issue and ain't overcome it yet. I've even contemplated about a real small inexpensive laptop just to overcome this issue. I'm hoping someone here has the answer cause I'd like to read it myself.

the system in my benni can do memory sticks its is a very awsome setup i like it alot plus the fact that if you wanted to you can burn a music dvd and play it right in the deck also hooks directly up to an ipod i have one with abad battery thinkingof using that instead of the memory stick as it is a 120 gig anyway why cant you just hit the ramdom button on the player i think that works on mine not sure missing toon still in the quansed :< ( anyway as i was saying i am sure that it worked.

Ya, thats what i would think...
Hey Bamby, what is it you are trying to do?
It sounds like maybe you are trying to create a random playlist. Or are you just hitting 'random' and letting it go?
Cause i could see that creating an actual replayable playlist of random songs may be a challenge, as i dont think theres a way to save a random list.....

Also, im also wondering the best way to setup the stick.
Im thinking right off of root, creating a dir called music. Then off of there, dir's of band names, ie skynyrd, zep, rush, dead kennedy's. :rofl
Then in there maybe breaking em into album names.

Having not played with the stereo yet, i would think just sitting at root, i should be able to hit random, and the thing would surf up n down the dir tree picking out songs randomly....

If i break it up this way, then i think i can either just hit random and let it flip all over, or i could surf to a specific band/album dir, and play a full album....

Beer will be involved either way... :nana

Walt,
I've got about 7 gig of music loaded on the thumb-drive and getting ready to actually download some more. I've got an assortment of practically everything short of rap :x and disco :gay to listen to. What I'd like is the ability to ether be able to pick full random of the entire play list or be able to pick lets say five folders (albums) of my choosing or mood and select them to full random play. I've been able to somewhat get a random play but it's been alphabetized. So if I were to choose Lynard Skynard for instance I may well be listening to all my different Skynard albums alphabetically without being able to include any good old Charlie Daniels for some variety. I'd like more flexibility so I can include some music that would appeal to everyone on the boat.
