mounting trolling motor on stern of boat

#1 Post by 95jagman » Wed Mar 17, 2010 9:12 am

I have a 2009 Sylvan 8522 FNC. I juat got it last month. This model has a 2 chair fishing station in the rear. I want to mount a trolling motor on the rear that will pull the boat backwards. there is no floor space outside the handrail. I am thinking of using a regular pontoon boat trolling motor mount mounted underneath the deck, and get the longest drive shaft trolling motor I can find so when the prop is in the water 12-15 inches I can reach the control head over the hand rail. The longest I have found so far is 52 inches. I am also thinking of a 55 lb thrust. I don't think I willl need remote control or foot control because it will be mounted about 2 feet from my chair. So a tiller/hand control should work fine.

Any thoughts?

I believe a 55 lb thrust trolling motor is the highest thrust motor you can still use a single battery with. Any higher and you need to go 24v. 55 lb thrust does OK if you are not going against a good wind. :2cents

Not sure how you will get a mount that will work on the underside of the floor. It would be upside down? Of course they make one for that application, just never saw one. I have a Minnkota on a slide mount on the frt of my boat and it's remote control or foot control. I've never used the foot control and the remote is great. Can run motor from any where on boat with tiny remote fob. Best thing since sliced bread for me. Can walk all around boat fighting the big one and still control motor. Good Luck however you decide! :2cents
