I'd bet $$ on a snapped shift cable going from the age of the boat. Open the motor hood (engine NOT running) and have someone try to shift into and out of F-N-R. Shift cam should move freely and easily.

Just an update. The lower unit was shot due to fishing line breaking the seals. Fortunately for us our insurance company paid for the damages :) We decided to go with a SEI lower unit and installed it yesterday. Took the boat out and she ran like a charm. We are anxious to see how the SEI holds up.

Another reason I like the prop guard, keeps it out of the prop, I've come back a few times to find I was draging a line, so I saved someone trouble and got it out of the lake.

Just an update on the SEI lower unit. We have just completed the 10 hours of break-in and all seems well. We have no complaints on the unit. It is time to do the first gear lube change. We will probably do that today. So far so good =)

I had an SEI lower unit on my Baja with a 454 mag, and never had a problem. It was an 87, so the last year the Alpha was used on 454. Just ease into throttle, and it lasted me 3 years all good still pushed the boat to 60mph, no issues. Then I sold it for my Crest Pontoon, and loving life- 17 people 3 coolers, party all day & night!

Here is to hoping that it is not your lower unit gears. I have had the same problem, about 3 times in my boating life, and all 3 times it was the lower unit gears just wearing out. Usually costs between $1500-$3000. If it does end up being this problem, they are usually able to rebuild yours for less than a new lower foot. The repair should last at least another 1000 hours...so think of it this way...cheaper than a new motor right?

Let us know how it works out.

Still doing good on the SEI lower unit. We went to Possum Kingdom for the fourth of July and put quite a few hours on the boat, pulled toys, and fought large wakes =) We are still happy with the product.
