Char-Griller Duo Vs. Brinkman Dual Function

#1 Post by Ron Burgundy » Mon Dec 26, 2011 2:00 pm

I've been thinking about purchasing this grill for sometime now. I'm about to pull the trigger, but wanted to see if anyone here has any positive or negative experience with it.

My .02...I REALLY wanted one of these too. I just couldn't justify it though, since I already had a Jen-Air full stainless hooked to natural gas, a Brinkman smoker, and of course my hog roaster on wheels. Then Menards ran a sale on the Char-Griller regular charcoal grill and the side fire box at the same time for 50% off. I thought, hmmm....who doesn't need another smoker, right??? Well I can say they are cheap...to say the least. My char griller is 1.5 years old and it looks like it's 3 times as old as my Brinkman (which I've had for 6 years). It's thin gauge steel, it has a full coat of rust already. The cast iron grates (which were the main reason I wanted it) are rusting already (and YES I know how to season them). If you can get it cheap go for it...but if you want it to look nice clean it after EVERY use, and cover it all the time. It still won't last like an American made unit...

Thanks for the review. That's the kind of info I need. I actually went to Lowe's and Home Depot to compare grills today, and after looking at the Char'Griller I am now leaning more towards the Brinkmann Dual Function Gas and Charcoal Grill
It actually costs a little bit less, but it looks more sturdy to me. Any thoughts on this one...? http://www.homedepot.com/Outdoors-Grill ... ogId=10053

I got a Brinkman at Sams. Looks similar to the triple function one at the bottom of the page once you click on the link. Mine is charcoal only, but for another 30 bucks I would go with the smoker also. On mine the grill top is stationary while you raise and lower the charcoal. Works great for searing the meat then back it down and slow cook. I have kept mine at the lake for about 4 years now and just a little rust on the chrome adjustment handles. I do keep a tarp over it though. Think if I was in the market now I would opt for the triple function one. I like the iron grill tops but you do have to season them so plan on lots of pam or grease or they will rust. Once you have cooked on them several times they more or less seal themselves, similar to cast iron skillets. I am pretty much a charcoal/hickory chip guy but the triple looks promising for the smoking feature.

Thanks, I forgot about Sam's Club. I looked online and foung something I like. Gonna go check it out tomorrow. I've been working on my Backyard BBQ Oasis for a while now, and the grill is going to be the final touch...so it has to be perfect!

Backyard BBQ

#6 Post by Ron Burgundy » Wed Jan 11, 2012 7:46 am

I decided on going with the Sam's Club triple zone grill (infared, propane, and charcoal) The setup took a couple hours, but it looks like a solid grill for only $259. Hopefully I can get a few years out of it before rust takes hold. It's going to be out in the backyard, but I plan to keep a cover on it.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. When we get a serious rain storm that area gets a few inches of water. Maybe I need some anti-fouling paint too.

I'm considering building a small wooden deck for it to sit on. Just can't decide if I should use pressure treated lumber or not. :paranoid

Nice Ron.........you owe me a filet for suggesting sams.....if you keep it covered it should be alright for a few years.
Think I may hit mine with some of that Hi Temp paint from HD this year, but will be moving it into the garage in a week or so cause the house is about finished. Looks like you got a do all for a great price. Oh were did that part in the top photo that looked like a lawn mower go in the assembly process

Damn...one rain storm without a cover, and already seeing a few rust areas. The bolts on the outside have some. I'm seasoning the grates now. Looks like I need to get a cover asasp.
