G3 tritoon performance

#1 Post by Dorsey75 » Tue Jan 06, 2015 12:00 am

I'm still on my hunt for a new boat and have taken all the advice and given up on the deck boats, they really wouldn't suit my family's needs like a pontoon boat does. So I have found a 2005 G3 lx3 22fc tritoon with lifting strakes and a 115 yamaha four stroke. I'm pretty sure we are going to buy it but was wanting some input on performance. The same place has basically the same boat in a double log with no strakes for 3 grand less, same motor. Are the strakes and third log worth the extra money? What kind of speed could i expect out of the tritoon? Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes in my opinion. I would never buy another toon without three toons and strakes and performance foils or similar. I had two tooner and went to a three toon with a performance package. No turning back here. But it really comes down to what you want and what your needs are.

I would go for the tritoon. We have a G-3, 326 SS Elite Tritoon with strakes pushed by a Yammi 250 SHO. GPS speed with a 1/4 tank of fuel and just me on board is constant 51mph. My boat is heavier than the one you are looking at so I would anticipate mid 30's easy for your speed???

I too am a fan of straked tritoons after owning a 24' two toon boat with a Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke for 28 years.

The 115 hp should be good for the low 30's. A 150 hp on the same boat should run about 40 mph. The 150 hp Yamaha is substantially stronger at lower rpm's when you're hauling people around. And these boats are more seaworthy when they have the capability to run over 30 mph. I would suggest 150 hp, even if you had to order the boat.

When I purchased my toon there were 3 major upgrades I had to pass on if I wanted some of the other extras, and not break the bank.
What it came down to for me was what was I primary going to use it for. I reasoned that 80% of the time I'd be fishing (Trolling under 4 mph) and sometimes not even using the gas motor.
That 15% of the time cruising at the wife preferred speed of 6 - 9 mph and the other 5% maybe tubing for grandkids at the wife's preferred speed of less than 25 mph.
So I passed on the tri tube the 150hp motor and the recommended Hydraulic steering if you got the 150hp motor. Those upgrades would have been another 8 to 9K and some added fuel consumption.
Don't get me wrong I like fast, but the only time I get to really use fast is heading in.
My point is let your intended use and required comforts dictate the upgrades unless you have no budget concerns. In that case go all out, life is to short not to enjoy a few extras.
I did opted to go from 90hp to a 115hp motor because of the small difference in cost and to pacify the wild side in me. :lol3 :lol3

Alright we decided on the tritoon, we pick it up in two weeks. So now I have time to get the logs polished before summer gets here. Hopefully . Thanks for the advice guys.
