The Yamaha 115 isn't that strong. The Merc 115 Command thrust is cheaper and turns a bigger prop. If that's an option.

The Evinrude will probably perform a little better but what about outboard oil?? Cant remember if it has a built in tank or not. If it doesn't then you have to mount the oil tank somewhere on the boat.

It does have a inturnal oil tank I'm swing more to the Manitou 22ft with the 115 Etec that all I need for where I will be running lots of sand bars and not a hole lot of room for running fast fishing, crabbing and a lot of riding maybe some beaching the boat for the day on the beach

I also thought about getting an Etec. Over the years the two strokes are being 'phased out.'
While they have great holeshot power, four strokes have improved a lot when it comes to 'get up and go.' They are less noisy (Etec may have improved that), four strokes are more fuel efficient, no adding oil...

Another question to consider is, who is going to service the Etec? I know two marine shops in the area that "won't touch them." The basic reason for this is they said the Etec is 'too finicky.' If you decide on Etec, make sure you have more than one shop to service/work on it.

Here's a video on Etec "indexing plugs."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSngWQoWrF4

So, if the plug doesn't line-up, try another and hope the plug thread pattern will allow the plug to be used?

These are a few things I considered when making the decision.
Etec is probably a great outboard. There are lots of them out there. It wasn't for me...
There is no perfect outboard...

(Yamaha 115 Vmax rated 126HP? Intake and exhaust improvements...)

While the ETEC sure seems to have lots going for it when you read up on the advertising hype, I think the proof is in the pudding by looking to see what's in your local marina... Go take a walk through 2 or 3 local marinas and see what's most popular... Take a look in our marina and you will be lucky if you don't lose count of the Yamaha and Mercury motors, I think the Suzuki count is even higher than the Evinrudes...

I like that Mercury chose to go with the old adage of "There is no replacement for displacement" with their most recent line of upgraded motors. The 2.1 liter motor 75 to 115 class are torque monsters in my opinion, whereas the Yamaha sports 1.8 liter for the same class of motor...

Hey, I know this post is pretty old but it's still only halfway down the first page at this point so.....

I realize the OP already has his E-TEC but wanted to add this: I know nothing about them other than what I've read and have only seen a couple in the wild down here in SC. Asked one guy about his 150 and he said he loved it. However, was at a local dealer that just did a remodel with a new shop that has large professional signs for several manufacturers running across the roofline. Salesman pointed at the BRP Evinrude sign and said it was coming down. Said they're going to stop carrying them because of all the issues they've had dealing with them on service/warranty/etc since the "BRP Marine" creation. Might be different up north or across the border but thought it was worth mentioning. Personally one of my mottos has always been "the best customer service is the one you never have to use."

Can't argue with that!

As owner of a 90 E Tec I can say they preform quite well. However owner maintenance sucks. Indexing plugs for one. You may buy a plug that won't index so you buy another and no refund on unusable plug or plugs. Changing water impeller is a major pain as shift lever connects under power head and almost impossible to line up while also lining up exhaust and drive shaft. The plastic panels suck and break easily and 100/1 oil is 45 to 50 bucks

Just a FWIW post:

I have no basis for comparison, because I am a bit less than two years into owning my first pontoon boat and first outboard. My 19 year old boat cost me $300K - but it came with a free lake house :lol3 It has a Yamaha F115, also made in 2000, the first year with fuel injection I believe.

It spins a 13.5"x15 prop at 5,800 RPM to push my 25', two-log boat at 27 mph with just me onboard and 23-25 MPH with four to six people. High performance? Oh hell no - it's a party in slow motion. Again, it may be my lack of experience, but I don't see the the 1.8 liter as being too anemic in its class. Would I like to have a 300 or a pair of 175's hanging off the back like my neighbors? Well, sure!!

From what I have learned, the F115 has proven to be a reliable little motor, but we have only put 190 hours on it so far. We shall see.
