Its been a year since the rebuild, and have been enjoying the boat alot, but the performance is not what I want, and I am done with 2 stroke motors. I have purchased a brand new Mercury command thrust 150 4 stroke, And am having a 3rd pontoon built by greatlake skipper, Has anybody had any Experience with them? He is adding a transom to the center tube and lift strakes on the out side of it, we had alot of weight up front on this, which comes from 4 batteries and a 6 foot bar that we installed, I am presently getting about 22 mph, but the waves do come over the bow when the lake is rough, so the 3rd pontoon is going to help alot, any body done business with them? How big are those toons ? Not an expert but if the outside toons are small I wonder how the 3rd toon will work. Is it still going to plow some.

I have a Manitou 22 footer with a 27 center and 23 outer toons. Gives a V shape. I get 43 with a G2 150. Boat rides very well.

The pontoons on the outside are 20 inch, I am puting a 24 inch on the center, with lifting strakes on both sides of the center tube, Do you have lifting strakes on the outer toons?

Mine is the SHP package. It was about 2,500 more than the VP package. The SHP has strakes on all toons. I can turn at WOT on rails.

Don't think adding the outer strakes give much of speed advantage though. More handling and rated for more HP.

I would bet strakes on the middle toon being much bigger than the outer toons would really work well for you.

All you are needing with the strakes is getting the nosecones out of the water. That's good for 10 mph in most cases. It is best to have 115 horsepower or more and underskinning.

Great Lakes Skipper is one of the few sources of toons. Most are seconds. They have a website showing all kinds of products available for all kinds to boats. They are in Racine, Wisconsin just north of Chicago.

I was figuring strakes on the inside toon would be sufficient, for speed, and the larger center would help handling, does any body have a picture of there 3 pontoon set up on the rear, would like to see one and determine what length shaft I need on the motor?

You sure greatlakesskipper is custom building one for you? They generally just resell overstock or mildly damaged toons they get from vendors. I've bought a lot from them for boats. No issues ever.

These guys do good custom pontoon work. http://www.custompontoonboatkitsetc.com ... steps.html

4" extra diameter is significant increase on a center pontoon. Thats some v-hull action right there. Many might advise against that do to the added stress your boat wasn't built for. Idk. Curious myself. I say run it and let us know.

:nana I would run a bigger center tube for sure, how is the centerline distance or quadrant distance between it and other 2 toons?

I have bought stuff from GLS, good dealings but as stated above GLS is a surplus outlet, I never heard of them doing custom work.

They do sell used pontoons and blemishes, but he said he would add strakes to both sides and install a transom mount, for about 2100, that about half of having a custon one made,Tim

GLS can tell you if there transom is for a 20" or 25" shaft. Depends on the design.

About 8-9 years ago I did what you are trying to do.
I have a 24' Harris w/ 19" toons w/ a 85 Force. The BEST I ever got then was 21 mph.

I added a 16' 3rd toon (motor pod) 26 or 28 inch? Could not add a full 24' due to trailer issues.
Raised my outside toons about 6 inches?
Steering and handling was much better.
With the 3rd toon have not buried the front since. I wish I had done it years earlier.
Where I'm at you should only have tri-toons, my view.

The issues I have due to adding the 3rd toon:
25-30% reduction in speed.
When the 85 let go I now have a 175 Johnson and now get around 24mph.

The issue is the toons are not the same size. The center toon is carrying the weight.
I thought going big H.P. would force it on plane not the case. I have played around w/ the prop and now running a 15 pitch 4 bladed Alum. I needed to strake like you are, what I have to explore is where on the center toon do you mount the strakes, due to the difference in how both sets sit when running? The outside ones at WOT on the rear, only the bottom 3-4 inches are in the water? The center toon 1/2 is in the water. I have come to realize that a tri-toon from the manufacture is zeroed in by them, and is set up as such. I have not found that point yet.

The shaft issue you brought up, I had to raise the motor 5" due to water droplets getting in due to how the water exits the rear. So a 5" extension kit had to go on the motor, so I'm still 20" down in the water and no more droplet issues.
Even with the above, adding the 3rd toon was the best move I have done, just do it and let the MPH issues fall where they may.
Good luck
