New strakes!

#1 Post by Liquid Asset » Thu May 07, 2020 5:17 pm

Strakes are going on! Well to be fair my boat already had 4 these are just on the outside of the outer toons. I bought my boat as a demo and it didn't have all the options I wanted but for the price it was worth adding things after.

My boat now has the Tahoe/Avalon wave glider package (except my fuel tank is a few gallons smaller) and I'm beyond excited. Only one side is added so far but my friend just sent me these pictures.

I traded him boats the other evening. My toon is in his shop and his bass boat is in mine lol. He's a master fabricator and this is a walk in the park for him. Once I get it back home the logs are getting painted. The polished risers, side keels, and new strakes will look great against gloss black metallic paint!

Tell your buddy he sucks....because he missed at least 2 dimes in that stack :P

Looks great, did he make the strakes or is it an off the shelf item? :thumbsup

I take it the 3M tape wasn't going to be strong enough to hold them on? :lol3
Looks great...I look forward to see the video of them in action.

Those strakes are matching OEM from Tahoe/Avalon. I ordered them last summer and it took forever for them to show up. I got them at the end of the season last year. It's way, way, way cheaper to have your own made ( what I did on my last custom build) , but they needed to match. We spent enough on this boat I want it to look like it's supposed to! Only a fabricator would know these are not original. They are tig welded vs. the factory mig job.

Would yall mind explaining the advantage of the 'strakes'?

How do they impact turning, it looks like they'd catch and cause inward tilting in a sharp turn while underway.

I'm guessing they make for a smoother ride but hoping to have that clarified.

Thanks!!!!

the main idea behind them is to create lift. lift helps the boat come out of the water more and go faster.

You'll get varying answers on how they impact turning, but when I was shopping for my boat, I had the chance to drive two almost identical boats back to back. Both we're tritoons of similar size and engine HP. One had six strakes (inboard and outboard on all three toons). The other had four strakes (both sides of the center toon, and inboard only on the outer toons). The six strake boat turned MUCH less aggressively than the four strake boat. It almost seemed as if those outer strakes were causing the boat to want to keep going straight. Obviously this wasn't a scientific test, but the difference was very noticeable to me. The boat I ultimately purchased has four strakes and it turns on a dime.
