I too had a piece of old impellar floating around in the engine and would clog the port to the p hole. Let's just call it an indicator or something pleeeeze

Anyway. You also said it wouldn't idle in the water. Is that in neutral or in gear?. I had a Merc 175 EFI that broke the exhaust tuner off at the base of the power head. It wouldn't idle in the water very good either. If you got it started and hit the throttle it ran great , just when it went back to idle it would smoother down and die. Don't remember how I found it. Ran great on the hose, put it in the water and the Mu@#$% ^^$@#$ :x wouldn't idle!!....Hair puller.

guess you could try running it in the water just deep enough to get water to the pump and then back it in and see how it affects the idle.

Is it carb'ed? or EFI

Carbed...88 model I believe. Ya it ran great on the muffs, back it in the launch fire it up...idels fine, stalls when you put it in gear.

If you still have the foot off you can pull the thermostat and back flush the system. Back flush the pee hole too.
Every engine I have had took the pee water from the manifold before the thermostat. On the 4s Merc it was down stream of the fuel cooler and the electronics cooler tho.

The thermostat is usually on the out flow side of the block, right before the water goes down to the prop hub.

Good info. I'ts all back together now, but before I did I stuck a hose on the outlet above the prop and I could blow through it (go ahead...bring on some more jokes :lol3 ) so I don't believe there's any major blockages. I may check the thermostat any way if I get to it this weekend. Thanks guys.
