How do you drain your fuel tank for Winterization?

Last winter, at the advice of my mechanic, i drained both tanks for winterization. I usually rain one and fill the other with non-ethanol gas and add a stabilizer. This spring I needed three fuel filter changes and a carb rebuild after sucking up all kinds of crap from the bottom of the tanks just moving from the ramp to my slip about 200 yards. Even after draining and cleaning, never again with this boat will I drain the tanks for the winter.
