Re: Hand Held Depth Finder
From what I could find all I can say is save your $$$. It seems the unit needs immersed in water to function and a mention was utilizing a plastic beg with water to read through a hull. It also appears the units fail pretty quick and are subject to leakage and ruination. A lot of customer reviews can be found here Customer Reviews

IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY ISN'T! For any sonar to work good it needs to be submerged. You want to lean over the side to put it in the water?

Re: Hand Held Depth Finder
Maybe I'm a little dense (okay- a lot), but I don't understand the appeal of a hand-held depth finder. I don't know what they cost, but an entry level Garmin is only a few hundred bucks installed on a pontoon.
Can someone enlighten me as to the usefulness/value of such a device?

Portability. If you don't have to install it, you can take it on any boat/pontoon and you won't have to pay a couple hundred per boat. One time purchase.
