I've a question about these high performance, high fuel economy chip reprograms. Are you likely to shorten the life of the big dollar outboard hanging on the stern? I was reading the other post and noticed Bryan has had his chip remapped to get 310HP instead of the factory 250. I was just wondering about all of that and did not want to question the people that are actually doing it like SIMONMOTORSPORTS since they are in it for the $$$.

I don't know about the Yamahas but for the Merc 6's they are mechanically all the same. The only difference is mapping that Mercury provides and labels the engine for, so if done right, they certainly don't have issues and they fully warranty them when new. With any aftermarket you're on your own there, but these guys are involved in racing so they tend to make sure the map is fairly bulletproof or it will cost them big money for their own racing programs.

I did question Eric Simon pretty extensively before sending mine in for the burn. He said it would have no effect on the life of the outboard and that if anything, it would help it by increasing the spark plug life and by reducing the amount of fuel washing past the rings, both caused by the way that the factory ECU is designed to run the fuel injection on the "fat" side. When the factory sets them up, they run them quite rich, so the engine won't have the possability to run lean and overheat the cylinders. Since the 'burn' I have not noticed any fuel smell at idle or slow speed cruising and have noticed the engine is a bit easier on fuel. It cost $800.00 to have it burnt. I feel it was worth it, because of all the time we spend on the water to self advertise our EzFender business. By having a noticeably fast pontoon boat, more people pull up to us and ask questions, then notice the bumper hangers and buy on the spot. Plus you know me, always tweakin stuff! Mine was a 225 stock, I gained 85 hp from it.
