question on motor placement on a tri tooned boat

Hello I am about to tri toon my 20 foot 1975 harris float boat. Before the motor sat almost flush with the two toons. Now if I build it the way im thinking the motor will be completely behind all three toons. Will this have any negative effects or should I shorten the toon and make it closer to how it was?? I will post pics as soon as I can figure out how to shrink them on this darn mac lol.

From what i've seen, most tri-tooned boats have the motor set back on the center toon in comparison to the outside toons. You'll also probably have the motor sitting lower on the transom/third toon because the cavitation plate will need to be about an inch below the bottom of the center toon. You may also need to consider longer steering/throttle cables. Good luck! Keep us updated with how it turns out.

Done it both ways with mine as I had 2 spare tubes to play with. You WANT the motor sticking back about 12-18"! The first time I did mine flush and it worked ok in a straight line but turning at speed was just as bad as a 2 tube boat. With the engine mounted back further it helps leverage the nose cones out of the water and makes it easier to plane (if you have a straked center) and turn at speed.

I agree, the more set back, the cleaner the water and you can raise the motor more for performance. Sounds like you are right on track!

Sweet thanks guys I should be starting the motor mount here in about an hour or so. Hopeing to have it back in the water by Thursday the latest cause Friday I plan on a lot of this . While the wife drives me around hahahahaha.
