how do I know if I spun my prop?

#1 Post by evinrude2stroke » Sat Aug 24, 2013 7:27 pm

So, this is the first real problem I've had since owning my boat. We went out today and about 10 min into the trip the engine would rev high while losing propulsion at the same time. :scared Once I bring it back to idle it seems to go ok but give it some throttle again and after about a minute it does it again. I made sure the weight on the boat was distributed equally. Still....same problem. Does this sound like a spun prop? :donno

About two weeks ago we got caught in a wicked storm that popped up out of nowhere, had my family along with my SIL & her family on board. Had a hell of a time getting it it tied up to the dock, wind & swells pushing us all over.....the wind actually spun us around and I ended up tying her up on the opposite side that I normally do.....while doing that the boat was banging into the dock, broke a corner cap :censored but got off safe & sound. I'm wondering if I might have bumped the prop into something while I was trying to get it docked.

Anyone ever have a similar problem in the past? Does this sound like a spun prop issue or should I Give the marina a call to start investigating?

So what you are saying is.....I should get a spare prop and put it on the boat.

Yep or at least an extra hub, but the best bet is to have another prop and hub

You can take a permanent marker and mark the prop and hub. Run it and check to see if the marks are still aligned to see if it slips.

Make a mark across it some thing like this and go for a ride and pull it back out and inspect the marks, if the marks dont ling up the way you made them then you know its slipping.

Thanks guys, for your advice. Listen to this......
I took my prop off at my marina and brought it in for them to replace it. Figured I'm gonna pay twice as much for one from them but heck...I need to be on the water by 2pm :drink4 ....My marina guy takes it and checks it out and says the prop is fine... :?. He says there must be something hanging by the motor...I said "What..What could be hanging??...He says maybe a fuel line or battery lines....
Sure as sh*t we walk over to the boat (which is in shallow water now) and low and behold the section of fuel line that lays in the transom is hanging though the outlet on the bottom. He says... yep that's the problem. We put the prop back on, pulled the fuel line back in and she runs like a champ... :nana. I nver realized the line was even hanging in the water and I never wouls have guessed that the line would have created such an issue. Anyway the day was saved.

:nana Glad to hear it was easy and cheap fix!

So the fuel line should never be in the water?

You need to replace that gray fuel line. It has a inner liner that breaks lose and wads up inside.

Replace it with another? Or a completely different type of hose?
