Re-power question

#1 Post by wijames » Mon Jun 16, 2014 9:36 am

I want to purchase a newer engine but can't afford a new one right now. Do most dealers take trade-ins or is it just better to try to sell it on Craigslist and buy another one outright? Right now I have a bad taste in my mouth from Craigslist. A real sleezeball traded me a 2004 Honda motor with a 2009 cover on it. Didn't realize it till after the trade but I'll be wiser next time! Opinions?

Lesson #1--Never buy a used motor or a used boat without having the engine completely checked out. That also means draining the lower unit gear lube and a pressure/vacuum test on the lower unit. Seal replacements alone are $300 in most motors.

Plus, always have them snap a pic of the VIN on the transom mount. That way you know the year, HP and shaft length. Before you buy.
Side note, my brother bought a heater off Ebay. The pic showed it working great. When he got it, it was an empty shell. Talk about pissed off!!!
