Inline fuse keeps...

#1 Post by justrfb » Mon Jul 07, 2014 6:51 am

Hello All.
Up here on beautiful Lake George, NY with the whole family, father-in-law, brother-in-law and nephew too. Boat is running great (thank you Jesus)... However, the inline fuse to my Garmin GPSMAP blows as soon as I install it. Looked around yesterday "under the hood" and everything looks good, can't see any obvious shorts. Do you have any experience with this or intimate knowledge of such a problem? Can't go for a night cruise without it. Thanks so much.

Sincerely,
Rich

If this is just the fuse for the gps then I would think you have a problem with the gps. I would trace the wire from the unit back to the fuse.

Yep, sounds like a short in the wiring some where ? maybe a bare wire is touching something ?

If it is just the gps fuse then it is a bare wire somewhere between the fuse and the unit

Check the connector and the back of the unit to make sure the pins haven't been damaged or any debris in the connector. Otherwise it doesn't sound good for the GPS.

Fuses pop for a reason.

Find the reason and the fuse will quit popping.

Either there's a short between the fuse and the gps or there's a short in the gps.

stick a .22 magnum shell in the spot for the fuse, and keep on trucking!

Thanks all!
Especially to PlaynDoc... :paranoid I do believe it is the harness that came with the unit. I don't want to think that but like you said. fuses pop for a reason. I guess I will get a new harness and figure a way to keep it out of the weather, even though I was religious about keeping the rubber cap on it. Thanks again and will be posting amazing pictures soon from beautiful Lake George, NY. Thanks again...
