Maintaining a Boat at a far-away Lake

We drive 2 hrs each way each day trip. Other than the gas cost, it's not that bad as it is an interstate highway most of the way. We plan to eventually build on the lake and end the commuting. My son who is 4 hrs away sometimes stays at a nearby motel and makes a weekend of it. I envy a co-worker who lives 10 minutes from a small lake and can head to the lake just for the afternoon.
