Pontoon Carport Sizing

#1 Post by JBO » Thu Sep 25, 2014 9:02 pm

Does anyone here store their pontoon in a carport? If so, what size do you have?

I've been looking at carports from this seller (with a local reseller/installer):

http://www.coast-to-coastcarports.com/

I'll be mounting the carport on grass most likely.

Does anyone here have any real-world experience with carport door sizes and wall heights?

I have a 22' Fish N Cruise plus trailer so was looking at the 31' length minimum.

Right now my 23 footer is under the carport that is attached to my home . It is 24 x 24 and it fits nicely under one half of it.

I will be building a metal detached carpot for it soon which will be12 ft high, and 22 x 25, for it and my tractor and such. The bid for materials for that was 1500.00 from a local metal mart. Mine will be a shed roof that I can get away with because we get no snow here.

I really like the Rv cover on that site (rv012). with maybe a little more side wall.

Still a work in progress but actually about finished. LED headlights and running the two that were on the boat were to much for the fuse Had to run them on their own wire...

Yep, they work good. mines 18' wide and 28' long. You can have it made any size and can add sides all the way to the ground if you want. Height can vary also.

Such metal carports are really good values. They have specialized crews that throw up metal buildings quickly--and they're gone.

And your pontoon boat will just last so much longer if it's kept out of the sun and if all seating, decks and carpets are dry at all times it's not running in the water.

My carport is a 13' x 30' boathouse of conventional truss/osb decking construction--with a 3' overhang. Even building a conventional carport is not a very expensive project. I have a friend that's a house framer, and he could build a carport on land in 1/2 day out of wood. A roofer could install shingles in 1/2 day or a metal roof in 2-3 hours.

Mine is 18X28 also. Worked really good, except it was too short. 12 foot in the center did not cut it. I wedged the top of the Manitou under it and did some major damage to the bimini. (forgot to put it in trailing position one :drink2 night. Now that the 36X56 shed is done, I just use the boat port when I come home from the plant at 0500 and park the truck under it. But, it served its purpose well. The Manitou before I sold it, and the Premier look like brand new because of it. Price was 1100.00 back in 2007. Erected in probably 1 hour by some excellent south of the border US tenants! May have been temporary US tenants, but they were good!

If you get a lot of snow where you live, reconsider metal carports. We don't USUALLY get heavy snow in MD, but in 2010 we got hammered. 22 inches of snow caused my Carolina Carport (15.5 ft high by 30 ft wide by 36 ft long) from carports.com to buckle badly. They came out and replace the buckled supports, but last year we got 11 inches and it buckled slightly.

Seconded on the stick build carport. I'm removing mine and building instead. This thing is getting scrapped. Carports.com and Carolina Carports suck, customer service is terrible. I was told it "could handle New England winters", a Maryland winter killed it. :x :x

My carport is 24'W X 36'L X 10"T. Smaller will work, but mine is also a workshop. It has a 1/2 bath and full electrical and plumbing

I recently ordered a 24x36 with 11' legs, rear gable and 6' down each side. It should be installed in the next 3-4 weeks.

Looking through the Active Topics and saw this thread and had to see who was using a metal carport above the Mason-Dixson. Badmoonrising is on the line. Happy for you that the boat survived. Here in Michigan there a lot of people who use metal carports for their RV's. I understand the reasoning because of the cost to build pole and rafter construction for the height compared to metal can be large. Unfortunately they just can't handle the snow loads typically seen in lake effect snow areas. They paid a price.

After the winter of 13-14 I was even getting really worried on my pole building with 4/12 pitch. One hundred inches of snow that just didn't want to melt...ugh.
