how to install anodes

#1 Post by dhsofficer » Sun Sep 14, 2014 2:20 pm

Looking at my new toon, I only see anodes on the motor. I assume since I play in the ocean, I should have them on the logs as well. My question is, how and where do I put them? There are no attachment points. If anyone has any thoughts, I would love the input and pictures.

Are there any brackets on the stern of the tubes for transducers and live well pumps and so forth? If so that where they can be attached. I'm surprised that on a new boat they aren't on there already.

Maybe someone that has a new boat can chime in about if they come with them.

I may be wrong but it seems to me that the folks on this site who use their
toons in salt water have the toons painted. old jim

While there is no reason to not add a couple anodes to your hull if you can find a suitable wet location there is no pressing need to install any anodes to the hull as long as you have them on your motor and your motor is well bonded to your hull....

Also it pays to make sure that any and all electrical items you add to your boat have good solid wiring both positive and negative; do not use your hull as a common ground as done on a car as this can accelerate galvanic corrosion via stray electrical current.

I had brackets on the tube sterns that extra anodes, along with transducers, and U/W lights were mounted to.

I plan to buy a new pontoon boat in spring, I've always had fiberglass boats before. I had not planned on painting the pontoon boat bottoms, since I will be keeping the boat on my lift. It will be in ocean salt water when underway, and I will be ordering Bennington's salt water package with anodes and sharkhide. Should I really consider painting the pontoon hulls? I was looking forward to NOT dealing with bottom paint with this boat. Way back when you could get Micron tin based paint, things were much less hassle, those days are long gone in the US, other than the exempt military boats, they can still get the good stuff, or so I have read.

I just got a new pontoon myself and it will be used in salt & fresh water. I added anodes to both brackets on the stern plus the one which came with the Mercury OB. I'm not planing to use bottom paint and clean my boat after salt use with a power washer. Used my jet ski's 90 % in salt and never had a problem even after 10 years. Clean-Up is the secret to salt use.
