Looking to Build a Mini Deck Boat
Hi all, been a few years since I was on here, sold my pontoon almost 2 years ago and a small class A motorhome and bought a larger motorhome with 2 slide outs.
I also have just finished a double deck trailer to carry my Jeep on bottom and a inflatable boat with motor on top that lowers down for launching by remote control.
However me an my wife miss the pontoon days so I was thinking of building a small deck boat with a 30 plus hp motor, where does one find someone to make a aluminum type boat deck, just the bottom part, I can finish the rest, or is there mini toons that have some performance to them than the regular ones that just plow thru the water, I want speed and small in one package. [25 mph average or more]
My length can not exceed 14 ft and width just under 6 ft to fit my custom double deck trailer.
Any ideas of who makes this would be great.

And if your wondering why don't I just get a Jon boat on put a wood deck on top like I have seen done, the problem is stability, for my length 14 ft or less they only come in around 40 inches wide or so, I am looking for around 68 inches wide.
Re: Looking to Build a Mini Deck Boat
I may be speaking out of place here...but I think you're going to need to go to a fiberglass hull to get 25+ MPH out of a 14x6' platform and still be safe. There are some aluminum hulls out there similar to in design to bass boats but I haven't seen anything personally lately. I think I would look to an aluminum hull semi-deep V or tri-style hull fishing boat to customize the way you want. Check the insurance auctions, I've seen a few pass through our local one. Either way with a platform of that size I think you are going to be battling a high center of gravity at those speeds if you want a deck-style platform.
Just one boat...after another, after another
Re: Looking to Build a Mini Deck Boat
Well I was looking at the CraigCat and thought is was neat but not much deck area and where does my dog ride, looking for something like this but more walking deck area would be nice.

Re: Looking to Build a Mini Deck Boat
This is about the closest thing that would meet your size requirements -- but it won't get near the speed you were wanting. But there's plenty of room for the dog here.

Re: Looking to Build a Mini Deck Boat
I doubt you are going to get a small (6 foot wide) pontoon boat that will handle the motor required for 25mph.
This might fit your bill, if you think more reasonably on speed. I bet even with a 15hp motor, this thing would be a blast for you

Let's see if I'm following you at all. Are you actually looking for larger or wider than typical flat bottomed Jon Boat that you modify to side seating etc. more or less like a deck-boat?timmac wrote:However me an my wife miss the pontoon days so I was thinking of building a small deck boat with a 30 plus hp motor, where does one find someone to make a aluminum type boat deck, just the bottom part, I can finish the rest, or is there mini toons that have some performance to them than the regular ones that just plow thru the water, I want speed and small in one package. Alweld does make a few models that may work with a lot of ingenuity on your part. Their model 1448VV for instance has a 48" bottom width with a 68" wide Beam so it would fit your trailer and it's 40 hp rated so it may also make your speed. Linky: Alweld

Thanks for that info, it is wide at the bottom and would still fit my trailer, was considering a jon boat with deck built inside like many have done.Bamby wrote:Let's see if I'm following you at all. I have nothing super helpful to add, but all of these ideas were things I didn't know even existed.
