It's already looking like a long winter
We are in our second day of freezing temperatures, and it already seems like an eternity till spring. I'm already thinking about getting the boat out. So, how do you guys pass time in the winter? Anybody have any big plans this winter? Any big mods to their boats?
I'm adding a trolling motor and a second battery to the house (I hope). I would also like to add a better depth finder. I plan on getting a couple of river anchors too. I'm not a big fan of the danforth anchor when setting it in shallow water for fishing. These are all big ticket things so I don't know how many I can get too. I'm also looking forward to fabricating some rod holders for the boat.

I like to shoot, thus I also developed a liking for re-loading.
So one of the things I can do while the weather stinks is to hibernate in the re-loading room and crank out some ammo.

I never stop building on something. Retired 6 years ago, and constantly have a project.
I bought my daughter a house that was original condition 1960. The den/kitchen is 16' by 40'. Living/dining room is 14' x 31'. And there's a 24' x 20' playroom. After serious cleaning, new paint and all new flooring, the house is really coming together.

Yeah, I usually start some type of wood working project during the winter. Last year I built a planter box, and I think this year I am going to try and build a custom cabinet to conceal our clothes hamper in the bathroom. Laundry can sure pile up around here!

Hmmmmmmm! I only reload and fix fishing rods and reels. I gotta rethink that!

My winter is going to be busy, we're going to re-do the living room after the holidays.. new moldings, new furniture, new paint, refinish the floors and a new wood burning stove. I'm glad...I'll be so busy I won't have to stare at the boat wrapped up in the yard all winter..

Moved into a new house this year; need to reclaim the garage as mine right now is a shithole with boxes of only god knows what crowding into the space. Thus the plan will be to get some storage flooring up in the attic and weeding through the boxes and thinning it down.....

Re: It's already looking like a long winter
I would caution you on how much weight you put in your attic. I assume it is above your garage? Our builders put in flooring above a section of the garage with 2x12's for the joists. We put a bunch of stuff up there and it wasn't long before we noticed cracks at the drywall seams where the joists starting bowing!!! We took most of the stuff out and put it in a storage unit. I was surprised to learn that unless those attics have the I-Beam joists, it can't hold a lot of weight.teecro wrote:Moved into a new house this year; need to reclaim the garage as mine right now is a shithole with boxes of only god knows what crowding into the space. I would be more inclined to believe that you've got some "iffy" or inferior construction going on there. I can not tell you how much stuff I had stored in the attic over the finished garage and house portion of our last house without any issues. Sounds as though you've got too much unsupported clear span over your garage for it it be able to take any real weight. The space over our 3 car garage is a finished bonus room and the attic over the house itself has the option of being finished already planned in but I've no need for any more living space.....C_M_25 wrote:I would caution you on how much weight you put in your attic. Re: It's already looking like a long winter
I've been in this house 10 years, and no car has ever been in my garage. With aging relatives dying, we keep inheriting more and more furniture better than the stuff we have.teecro wrote:Moved into a new house this year; need to reclaim the garage as mine right now is a shithole with boxes of only god knows what crowding into the space. Our intentions are to clean out our house, and send all "this stuff" to our daughter's new house. Maybe we'll finally get the old Jag convertible inside by Spring.

Re: It's already looking like a long winter
Dang ten years? Thank goodness we got a big garage as I've got the SUV, motorbike, hood cart, riding mower, extra table and two refrigerators as well as a couple of workbenches going on out there. The boxes are carefully stacked rather tall to keep them from eating up too much floor space.... Last garage was smaller but didn't have the cart or mower and I had 10 years to organize it....Bamaman wrote:I've been in this house 10 years, and no car has ever been in my garage.
