I sure would! Its nice to know where your RPM's are for proper propping, which effects fuel economy and engine life. An engine struggling to make proper RPM's won't last 1/2 as long as one that does. Another way to tell the heath of your outboard. Pull the sparkplugs and read them! Tan is good. White, dark brown and black-----bad! This goes for 2 and 4 strokes.

I'd say get as good as you can afford. It's nice to see what's going on, you can even get an idea when its prop repair time. something you may not be able to see can show up on the tach, and speed. As was already stated its a good way to keep up with your engine performance.

when i've been on long boat trips, i use the tach as a 'fuel control' kinda thing... to optimize fuel use... speedometer is good, but if you're going a long way, against the wind, and need to save gas... i keep the RPM's on a particular number... like 3000, and cruise along... that usually puts me about 13-15mph...

I was thinking of it as a tool to tell me when to change the oil & filter, I won't be able to watch it while running as it will be under the engine cover.

The tiny tach I am looking at does both RPM & hrs I have a dash RPM
the tiny tach has 2 wires you wrap one around a sparkplug wire the other is a ground.
they are small you can use them on your lawn mower.... any engine
