Pontoon repair (pin holes)

#1 Post by dragonx » Fri Mar 27, 2015 5:03 am

Ok need to have some feed back. If logs are sealed will they take on water if pin holes are below the water line? I have a spot with corrosion and can not reach the nut to remove it without dismantling deck. If I clean corrosion and use Marine Tex putty then paint area with proper paint will I be setting myself up for a bigger problem later? Believe it or not when I did pressure check on section that had pin holes I had positive pressure in that section when I removed the bung nut.

We had water in the rear section of one of our logs. When I took it to the welder he said that during the summer when the logs get hot, they will suck in any water that goes over the crack (or pin holes in your case). So probably now during the winter/spring, the logs aren't warm so the suction pressure was not as much. I would do whatever it takes to get those pin holes repaired.

We leave our boat on a lift. But in 2 years of use, it sucked in over 20 gallons of water and the crack was above water line. So it only took on water when we were underway.

What caused the pin holes? Electrolysis? My Manitou got a bad case of Premature Electrolidation when I had it slipped at our condo at Lake of the Ozarks. We had a faulty junction box somewhere in the boat house that was loosing current into the water. It was so bad that it ate one of my slip neighbors struts on his lift and it collapsed with his boat on it. My pontoons, were so pitted that I had to wet sand and re-polish when we got back home to Iowa.

IMO I think the corrosion was caused by not rinsing the logs down properly when they last used it. Bunk boards where not PT, but all the bolts holding them in place where corroded to the point of replacement. Most of corrosion was on inside of logs.
