Best way to attach rope to chain...recently lost my anchor.

#1 Post by wrd1972 » Sat Aug 22, 2015 4:37 am

Well after 5 years I lost my first anchor. So in the process of re-doing it, I was wondering the best way to attach the rope, to the chain that leads to the anchor.

Should a "particular" tie-knot be used? Or is there a better way of doing it using hardware. I just want to use whatever is the most reliable and long lasting.

Thanks

Anchor Hitch

I use Animated Knots for all my knots. Even bought the app for my phone.

use a Shackle. The end of the anchor line should have a metal thimble spliced onto it. See pics below. Then attached the thimble on the anchor line to the chain. No way you will lose it.

Depending how "nautical" you feel, you can always get a fid and learn to braid your anchor rode and install a thimble end, then shackle that end to the chain.

I've read in a boating magazine that while the thimble and shakel is the best, it has been found that braiding a loop in the end of your rode and pass the loop through the ring or last link in your chain and then pulling the rode through the loop is perfectly acceptable. Good luck.

+1

I would also add that you should use a Captive Pin Anchor shackle. You probably already know this - a "captive" pin is permanently attached to the shackle even when you unscrew it. (How many times have I fumble-fingers dropped little items overboard???). Also, you may have some other shackles around the house (D-shaped or twisted) but those don't take load in multiple directions like an anchor shackle does (rounded shackle like Strake's picture).
