Re: Here's a teaser for you!
Ya know, that's a good question. While this one DOES have reverse, setting one up to run either way would only take two relays (but I would use four, just because I could). The headlight relays I bought off eBay are rated for 60 amps. A trolling motor can draw 60 amps. That's cutting it too close for me. By putting them in parallel, each one only has to handle 30 amps.smoker62 wrote:My trolling motors never had a reverse, but Bob was an electrical engineer right ?

Re: Here's a teaser for you!
The results are in.
It works great! Well, with a caveat.
It turns faster to the right (trolling motor in forward) than to the left (trolling motor in reverse).
I'm working on finding a prop that's closer to bidirectional, so I get equal performance in either direction.
I'm thinking a MotorGuide Machete III looks very interesting.
360 degree turn to the right takes about 20 seconds. To the left, maybe 30 to 40? I'll use a stopwatch soon!
It makes entry into a single slip with a 10 mph cross-breeze seem easy!

Awesome.
I'm surprised that the newer, bigger (25 feet plus) toons don't have these from the factory. Hell, we have cars that can parallel park themselves now, why not boats?
