I'd say the kids are the ones to suffer this summer. Gonna be less time tubing, and more swimming and beach time. I'm only 1/4 mile from the ramp, so towing doesn't cost me anything really. Maybe less trips to different lakes, and more time at our local lake.
Like everyone has said, you can have just as much fun anchored out or beached than you can if you burn gas all day.
To me the key is to just be on the water. Hell sometimes I'll put the boat in travel less than a 1/4 mile and sit in the bay and watch for ramp follies while throwing back a few cold ones.

We have 4-5 neighbors with 40' offshore racing boats running all over the lake every weekend. We've yet to figure out how the common man can afford to run 74 gallons per hour @ $4.00 per gallon week after week. All they're doing is waking me up early Saturday mornings with their wide open exhausts.
With our pontoon boat, we just start it, back it out of the boathouse, and run 1/2 mile into the middle of the lake--to enjoy the sunset. Floating is especially nice late at night letting the wind/current push you a mile or two while listening to music. Then we motor back upriver and float down again. You don't really have to use anymore gas than you want.

I used to have a small Baja sport boat, but it couldn't do what we wanted it to, so we went tooning. A friend with a large performance boat told me about his last outing, $500 for gas alone, burned it all in one day. He only goes out once a month or so now. Funny thing was watching him get passed by a bass boat!
