Update on my 3.0 I/o engine "water ingestion" problem

UPDATE...........here's the link to my original post at OPDB site:
http://www.pdbmagazine.com/fusetalk/for ... erthread=y
I thought I'd update those who were interested about the water ingestion problem with my almost new 3.0 I/O.
Put this in the category of "buying from the right dealer and engine builder, it seems.
Was talking to the boat dealer Monday and he told me they found a bent rod and broken rod bearing and that Volvo-Penta sent a rep down to watch the teardown. The rep was there to see if V-P had a "problem" with the motor/boat design. So that tells me I'm not the first one. I told the dealer I was not happy owning a new boat with a rebuilt motor and that I would never trust it again. And if it was that easy to get water into the engine, then I don't want another Glastron or V-P engine.
Anyway, good news. The dealer called today and V-P is sending down a new motor and they're shipping the old one back to the factory. Volvo-Penta is "not admitting responsibility" but is sending the new motor because of "customer relations". Should have it back in a couple of weeks.
Ye ha!!!!!
(I still won't trust it because we still don't know why it happened)
I'll keep ya updated........
Randy

That's great news Randy! Did they say if they were going to get to the bottom of the water ingestion problem ?

Yeah I'd want to know exactly how it happened so it doesn't happen again out of warranty.

Hell yes I'd like to know what happened. They just keep saying that it was either a fast shutdown......like running fast then chopping power and letting wave overrun the stern. Or, launching into a steep ramp too fast.
Neither of those things happened, but they just keep saying it must have happened.
I keep saying that it must have been a bad head gasket or defective flapper valve.

My son had the same problem on his Volvo, but his was a 5.0 liter. It took the dealer 2 months to fix and he had to pay a bunch. Even though Volvo paid for the parts. His was on it's second year. He never trusts his boat to get back sense.

That's not good to hear, although as I understand it, the 3.0 Volvo-Penta is really a GM block. But I'm pretty sure the exhaust manifold is a V-P design.

True, exhaust manifolds are either VP or Mercruiser. The 3.0 is a GM block built in Mexico. I would be surprised if they didn't add an exhaust riser extension (spacer) when they install the new motor.

The fuel injected model would be nice.

Did you happen to ask ? I mean with all the trouble and loss of use don't you deserve it ??

Dealer called yesterday. They were finishing up with installing the new engine and were gonna test it, then winterize it for me. I can pick it up anytime and all I have to pay is for the winterizing. Dealership is about 100 miles away, so I'll probably go get it this Saturday.

Ya, me too. What chaps me is I'll have to wait until end of March to find out. And I'll have to break in the new motor. that part's not too bad cause we'll just be fishing this Spring anyway. Won't be driving it hard or making full speed runs anywhere until it warms up anyway.
