Dual Motors??????????

#1 Post by BigDaddy » Thu Jun 14, 2012 11:06 am

We keep our Pontoon at a local state park which allows a maximum motor size of 20hp. When I ordered my 22ft Sun tracker in 2008 I knew we were going to do alot of boating at that lake. Well, the kids are now getting older and want to go faster (so does Dad) and was thinking about getting a larger motor. Is it possible to mount two different sized motors to the toon? When we want to go to a larger body of water and tube we will use the larger motor, when we want to float around at our normal lake, we'd use the 20hp motor. I didn't want to be pulling/switching motors everytime. Any ideas or is it too much hassle???

I don't really see it being feasible.

I'd like to add a 9.9 hp with the 50 hp thats on there now and be able to use one or the other.

If I was in your shoes and didn't care about spending the money Id sell the motor you have now and buy the biggest motor you can afford and mount it as your main motor, and use it when you go to the big lakes. Then buy a kicker motor and bracket like a merc pro kicker 9.9 and have it for the small lake....I know that 20 isn't moving you boat much faster than the 9.9 will either way it's way to slow but you will still have the big motor when you need it!

My boat had a flip down kicker bracket on it when I bought it and I did run my 7.5HP on it a few times but when I rebuilt the boat and put the new motor on I ditched the kicker.

the question is, can you take the boat out on a "20hp" lake with a bigger engine hanging on the back? I know it varies around here lake to lake. I had a whinny "lake association official" yapping at me when I was launching my pontoon on a 10hp restricted lake because I had a 70hp hanging on the back, I politely pointed at my 6hp kicker. :rofl He decided to call the game warden when I refused to leave and the game warden showed up, flagged me down, seen I was using my kicker, and said have a nice day!

Lot of times you have to trim the larger motor so the prop is not in the water.

You can also take the prop off the larger motor to be in compliance.

On second thought you could use your 20 for a kicker if you can find a bracket that will hold it. One down fall to a kicker is it's just extra weight and the bigger the kicker the hevier it is, that's why i'd go with no bigger than a 9.9.

How do they mount dual motors on the performance toons? I've seen dual 150's or 250's in some pictures. Is it feasable to use the same type setup with two different sized motors?
