#1 Post by big johnson » Sat Jun 16, 2012 1:56 pm

i just replaced my 13.75 x 13 alum. 3 blade that was turning 6000-6200 WOT.. with a stainless 13.25 x 15 3 blade and it won't spin over 5000 WOT trimmed out.. i am kinda pissed after spending $ 300 ON THE NEW PROP... i thought i did enuff research and had all my numbers rite and was expecting to be in the 5700-6000 range WOT with the stainless.. well back to the drawing board.. BTW .. she sure looks good with the stainless!!

Where did you buy the prop. I hope not on the internet, but I would take it back and talk to the guy who sold it to you. Look like you might have gone too big.

My educated guess is that you should have stuck with a 13p in the stainless because they don't flex. Our boat came with a 15 1/4 x 15p aluminum and I finally went with a 15x15p Enertia and it was perfect.

Sometimes it pays to purchase propellers from prop repair shops, where you get their expertise for free. Fortunately, our local prop shop is owned by a distant cousin.

There are even some online prop shops that'll work with you about trying and returning props if you pay for the freight and don't scratch the prop.

Good luck!

Usually the jump from Aluminum to Stainless cuts 200-300 rpm off WOT in my experiance. Due to stronger blades and more agressive cupping a Stainless usually acts like it's 1 pitch higher. Your 15 pitch is acting like a 16 pitch aluminum and a 13 to 16 pitch is a huge jump. 6200 rpm x 19% difference in pitch = 5000 which is exactly what your seeing! A 13 pitch stainless of the same brand would put you at 5800

A couple years ago I bought a Solas stainless prop the same dia. and pitch as my Yamaha aluminum one. I lost 800 rpm! A lot different cupping. Luckily I only paid around $125 new from Iboats and sold it to a member here for what I had in it.

thanks for the help guy's .. i just bought a 90 4 stroke yammi which we put the aluminum 13.75 X 13 on and it is turning 6200 or so WOT the spec on the more is like 5500-6000 WOT so im just over reving it when i have a light load but since i wanted stainless anyway my service tech advised that to go to stainless i would need to drop the diameter by a 1/2 inch and go up to a 15 and that should drop me 3-400 rpm's.. well we missed the mark on that one. i will put the aluminum back on for now and look for a 13 p stainless.. FYI . i bought the prop new off of e-bay from a seller that is in the orlando area , not his fault and no big deal i will just pass the prop along to someone that needs it..
