90 horse Evinrude e-tec
We recently purchased a new Palm Beach 22 ft pontoon with a 90 horse Evinrude e-tec on the back. We love the toon and the motor but top RPM's with two aboard and 23 gal tank half filled is around 5000 rpm and boat speed in the mid twenties. The dealer says that is where it should be. The manufacturer recommended range is 4500 to 5500 rpm. I was expected higher rpm's.
Those of you with e-tec's, what has been your experience?

You are in the middle of the RPM range. You could back off the pitch a little if you want to tweak it up but you probably won't see much performance change.

Your in the range as was said. Mine runs WOT at 5200 and about 23 mph. I thought I wasn't getting the correct rpm's but found out my tac read low.

+1
lower your pitch, but you will lose a bit of your top speed. Mid twenties is very good for 90 horse anyway. My prop is a 13.75 x 13 and also get around 24-26 MPH.

Yeah, you're RPMs are fine. Lowering your pitch will reduce top speed and therefore burn more fuel.
When I first bought my boat, she wouldn't tach out more than 4200RPM. I thought it was incorrectly propped and yelled at the dealer.... come to find out I had a bad ignition coil on one cylinder and I was only running on 3 cylinders.
You're doing great if you're getting in the mid 20mph's with the 90hp on a 22' toon.
I have a 115 and get in the mid 20's on my 24'.
I tach out right around 5100 RPM.

I have a 40hp. I run 18mph at 4500 rpm's. I always thought that was a little low in the rpm range but since it's a 40 I'm not complaining.

Question, why would he lose speed by less pitch if he doesn't exceed his max RPM. he would still be in his max power range.
I have the 90 e-tec on a 18 ft and gps 31 mph at 4300 rpm. Running a Michigan Alum 13.5x15 and was planning to acquire a hydrus 13 7/8x13. This will probably put me over 4500 r's but with a load I should be right on.

Re: 90 horse Evinrude e-tec
First of all, thanks to all for your helpful replies. I didn't phrase my question quite right but still got the info I needed.
My real concern was whether the RPM's I am turning, 5000, was high enough. I had read several threads discussing the potential damage that can occur if the engine is lugged. The replies received indicate that I should be just fine. I did GPS the speed which can out to 24 which means the toon speedometer is pretty close at 25.
Thanks again.

From the ETEC Owners Group website. Looks like you are running in the Optimum range for that motor.

Lots of info on that website and good help and how to's when you need them.
