fuel water separator

#1 Post by sgpwayne » Tue Jul 24, 2012 8:34 pm

I need some serious info on the fuel water separators everyone seems to have

1. names of reliable units
2. approximate cost of units
3. placement on a 2 tube toon
4. maybe some pix of your installation
5. pros and cons of installing one.

I haven't had a problem yet, in fact still have the original in line filter. I just keep using Startron, Seafoam, and the blue marine fuel treatments (can't remember the name)

Any help would be appreciated THANK YOU

I have a stainless Racor filter base and there are a few companies that make elements that screw on it.
It is mounted on the rear deck ring over the motor pod
The down side of that location is it gets wet so the steel elements rust before they go bad. I shoot a few coats of rustoleum on them before I install them.
There is no real down side of having one. It solves a lot of problems.

This is what I use. I really like the site glass (plastic) to see if there is any water.

My filter is factory OEM Yamaha, and they're standard on Yamaha equipped Benningtons.

Other than OEM, the Racors are the most popular, and easiest to purchase filters for.

I was noticing the Yamaha filter is about $25--relatively expensive item to buy periodically. I'll have to order them online or at an authorized dealer.

If you get the Racor with the smaller thread filter (there are 2 sizes of thread hub), there are lots of elements that will screw on it, including that one with the clear bowl.
I had the clear bowl for a while but I am using the regular type now.

I need to replace mine. The base has rusted so I am pretty sure the element is seized to it. I'm going to need both pieces.

I just installed a Racor 120R a couple of days ago.

On the initial installation I had the squeeze bulb between the motor and the filter but it wasn't working right, the bulb wouldn't pump up even though I had primed the filter. Swapped the two lines around as shown in the picture and now it works properly. I like this setup better anyway, the bulb was way down in the motor pod before but now it's easy to access while standing on the stern.

I had problems for 20 years, 3 different motors and lots of new parts. It is real hard to get that filter clear totally if the bulb is under the console. I can't make sense of it. I just know. You may never see a problem but there will be bubbles in the fuel line occasionally. I put in an electric pump and I never see any bubbles
