who uses a sand anchor?

#1 Post by gramps » Thu Aug 09, 2012 9:07 am

I seen a large SeaRay using a screw in sand anchor last week and was wondering if anyone uses them and how good are they?
They would be lighter than an anchor and easy to screw into the beach, what do you think?

There have been a few on here (not me) that have said they used one of these
Shore Spike
with satisfactory results.

I use one of those spiral dog tie-outs and a bungee cord -- work for us.

I use my 17 pound danforth for all of my anchoring needs.
Most of the time I hand set it in shallow water or up on the bank but it is big enough that throwing it out on deeper water works well too.

This is against the river bank in a place where we have created a good dockage over the years (A "W" shaped cut out on the bank for the toon tips so the deck is over the bank)

I use to beach a lot in Grapevine lake on the beach/sand... in our sea doo boat, we had rear anchor that was the spike like pictured above, it seemed to hold better than our very expensive box anchor or Danforth anchor up front when wind got up !! I kept it when sold the boat .... it was easy to drive into the sand and easy to get back out.

My 2 cents.

What type of anchor to use in sand?

#6 Post by GrandpaGreg » Thu Aug 09, 2012 6:04 pm

We plan to spend a lot of time anchored over a sandbar in our lake with our new Berkshire LTD CL190. Part of the package that came with the boat was a 10lb 'navy-style' anchor.

However, when we toss this anchor overboard at the sandbar (water is about 2 1/2 - 3 feet deep) it doesn't hold the boat in place very well espeically if there is even a slight breeze. :hammer The lake bottom is totally sand....no weeds, mud etc.

What size and kind of anchor should we be using?

Usually I am going to be out walking around anyway so I jump over and "stick" the anchor where I want it when we beach.

We bought and used this one ... worked very well, seen it hold much larger boats in sand w/ease.. get the LARGE, its only $10 difference.

On our sand bar everyone uses one made of pvc pipe with a screw auger at the bottom. The local Ace sells them for $20. Would be easy to make out of 1-1/4" PVC. Just need a straight section and a small piece to male a T-handle top so you can easily twist it. Another style I have seen is just a pointed steel post that they stick straight down in the sand.

Not sure who posted it but I used the idea. Get an 8' length of grounding rod at Menards for 8 bucks. I welded an 8" piece of 1/2" rod on top for a T handle . Welded a ring on top of that for a rope clasp and good to go. Cheap version of the fiberglass pole that was posted in another link. I also can pull up to the sand bar and just stick it through my bow eye for a short stop . I have one with the copper sheathing and made a second one out of galvanized.

Added the link. Same theory as this.http://www.stickitanchorpins.com/

If you are around salt water, steel will not work. An alternative is a golf flag pole. Golf courses throw them away when they get new flags.

All sand where we anchor mostly also. A good size Danforth style anchor with 8 feet of 5/16 chain works excellent for me. I use one off the front and one off the back while anchored on the sandbar.

+1 on the Danforth

If you ask me hand setting an anchor gets to be a real PITA.
I used to have a cheap light weight anchor (came with the boat). Looked similar to a danforth, but it always pulled in any current. Didn't matter how well I hand set it, always pulled. Would have to continually adjust and readjust. :x :x

So I broke down and bought a $40, 9lb danforth, and in the strongest of current and wind it does not pull in sand. I have also used it in grassy lake bottoms and it holds great. One of the few anchors I have had that I can throw it and it will set itself. I have 6ft of chain and seldom use more than 15ft of rope.

I think mine is 17 pounds and it will grab pretty well but I don't want to be dragging it through sea grass so I just stick it where I want it.
