Total newb here....so my question is....

Is it proper etiquette to "tip" the guy that fills you up with that expensive Marina gasoline? If so how much? Just curious..... :donno

Our marina gas was $.97 more than pump gas at the drive in market this week.

And they're not paying state road tax on the fuel. I think they can afford to pay the guy at the marina adequately.

And everyone wonders why I haul 5 gallon jerry cans 50 yards to the dock.

Been carrying the cans also. I did tip the guy that use to fill years ago, but then again I tip way better after a few beers, the world seems nicer to...........
Amount of tip probably 2 to 5 bucks certainly not the amount % you would tip at a nice restaurant.

I carry cans too, but around here the Liberal assholes with sailboats pitch a fit over it. I am good friends with the new marina manager and she says the sail boaters are not only cheap assholes, but complain about everything they can. :rofl :rofl :rofl

When at LotO, I'll tip the teenage girls and guys (summer help) I know they don't make alot of money at the pumps. If I spend $100 bucks on gas, I'll usually tip them $5.00 or so. If the owners pump it, I won't and I don't think they expect it. I tried to tip the gas attendant at one spot, not knowing he was the owners son and he absolutely refused it. I respect that. After they get to know you will tip them for good service, they will get to you faster and the owners will even let the attendant grab a bag of ice for ya or slip ya a coozie, because they see us taking care of their help.
A small gesture of appreciation goes along way.

If a guy just meanders out there at his leisure and hands you the hose, no I am not tipping him.
If the guy sees me coming, helps me tie up and actually gives me some service I would give him a tip.

If it was a pretty girl with big tits, she gets a tip for just leaning over to get the money ;)

Usually I gas up at my dock from 5 gallon cans.

We aren't allowed to gas up at the dock and there isn't a gas pump in our little marina so we either go across the Lake to Soldier Creek or trailer the toon a couple of miles to the gas station. At Soldier Creek they have summer help that is good about helping to tie up and fills the tank. I always tip for good service. Usually $3-4 but then 20 gals doesn't cost that much. :biggrin2

I'll tip $5-$6 bucks for 25 gallons if they help tie up and gas the boat. If I have to do all the work, I tip myself.
Most of the young ladies here at LOTO are working for tips and a little bit of salary. At some of the marina's in the busier part of the lake where the guys with small penises and big cruisers pull in, get a couple hundred gallons of gas and leave a couple of bucks.
Not cool.

Greg, I was gonna mention that, as well, Denise can tell the boob size from the amount of the tip I leave. Just shakes her head, no words...

bassn386, Yep! Was at Frankie and Louie's, a younger guy with a big ass Fountain pulled in and said fill it up! When the pump hit 125 gallons, he flipped out when the girl said $610.00 for gas. His buddies helped him pay for it, no tip, I'm sure! What a Prick, could have pawned off his gold necklaces to pay for it! I'm sure he was driving Daddy's boat, Denise said he looked, indented! I'm sure was he was, didn't look...

Last summer one of my daughters worked tying up boats, etc. Yes, tips are pretty much all they get.

So even if you think you are overpaying for gas, not tipping doesn't hurt the owner of the marina, it hurts the kid helping you out.

We also carry our own gas in ($1.20 diffference), but I can see where a marina does have more costs. He probably does not get the same breaks ordering 4,000 gallons a month compared to the service station which might get 5 8,000 gallon loads. For the most part a marina must make all of their profits in 4 months, the other 8 they are probably lucky to break even on any given month. If the business were so lucrative, I am sure everyone (including the big boys) would operate one.

Edit ---- I tip $5.00 if they do the work.

Never thought about it, until I was moored at Lake Granby, and had to take a water-taxi to the pier I was moored at. When I tipped the guy, he looked startled! :biggrin2

That's the place you can go to, to book a "three hour tour" and meet young ladies named Mary Ann and Ginger.
